Murmansk Oblast brings together striking natural scenery and stories to discover in museums, along trails, and at archaeological sites. In Umba, the Pomors and their way of life take centre stage; at Kanozero, the journey leads to rock art on islands. Teriberka Nature Park offers a different focus, with bird colonies, plants, and a waterfall on the Barents Sea. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Pomor Culture and Trails Around Umba

The “Starinnaya pomorskaya derevnya Umba” walking trail brings history to life along the way: seven information boards along the route cover the settlement, the Pomors, their livelihoods, and their daily lives. The guided trail is 5.5 kilometres long, follows a river, and leads to the sea. It also offers insights into northern wooden architecture. If you plan to take this tour, you must book it at least two days in advance and should check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

The exhibition at the Museum of the History, Culture and Everyday Life of the Tersky Pomors also explores the work and skills of people in the region. Its historical scope runs from the 18th to the early 20th century. The livelihoods covered include fishing, hunting marine mammals, shipbuilding, and pearl fishing. It also covers carpentry and joinery, wood processing, shoemaking, as well as women’s crafts and needlework. Together, these subjects offer a multifaceted insight into working lives and craft traditions, rather than reducing Pomor history to a single occupation.

Umba is also home to a literary museum dedicated to Dmitry Balashov, located in the Tersky Intermunicipal Library. The Amethyst Museum focuses on the deposit at Cape Korabl, natural and synthetic varieties of quartz, and amethysts from deposits across Russia and the world. Those interested in geology will find a different way to explore the region here than in the history and culture exhibitions. Check the current visitor arrangements before visiting a museum.

Another place of historical interest is Tonya “Tetrina,” an open-air historical and ethnographic complex documented since the 15th century. For a trip focused on Pomor culture, these insights complement the trail through Umba: the information boards cover the settlement and everyday life, while the museum’s exhibits explore livelihoods and crafts in greater depth.

Kanozero and Nature in Teriberka Nature Park

At Kanozero, waterways and cultural heritage meet. The “Petroglify Kanozera” Museum Reserve offers a trip to the lake, where an island complex of rock art can be seen; it is designated a cultural heritage site of federal significance. A water route along the Umba passes through Kanozero to the petroglyph complex. Several thousand water tourists travel along the Umba and pass through the lake during the season. Organised visits and the water route described here are different ways to approach this destination; check the current conditions and dates before planning.

Teriberka Nature Park protects the nesting sites of rare bird species, plants listed in the Red Data Book, and natural landmarks such as the Teriberka cliffs. Protected natural features also include two bird colonies of kittiwakes and rare cormorants. A striking feature of the landscape is Batereysky Waterfall: water from Lake Maloye Batareyskoye plunges over steep cliffs and flows into the Barents Sea. A permit applied for online and an entrance fee are required to visit the nature park. Find out about the current process before your trip.

Regional Routes and Visit Planning

Beyond individual places, Murmansk Oblast offers a range of perspectives through its routes. Two national tourist routes are registered in the region. “Zapolyarnyy kaleidoskop” traces history from the exploration of the Kola Arctic by Indigenous populations to the present day. The “Ot Barentseva do Belogo” route is described as a week-long tour through the northern Kola Peninsula and leads to the Khibiny Plateau. If you include such a tour in your plans, check the current route description.

Lapland Nature Reserve is located in the central part of Murmansk Oblast, seven kilometres from Monchegorsk. Visits, including independent walks, are only possible by prior arrangement. You should factor this requirement into your plans well in advance. If you are planning a trip focused more on nature and trails, also distinguish between a route description and the conditions for visiting the protected area in question.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: Umba is associated with Pomor culture, museums, and trails by the water; Teriberka with protected nature, birdlife, and the waterfall. You can then choose an area to search based on the experiences you want to shape your stay. Individual activities have their own planning requirements, such as booking the guided walk in Umba in advance or obtaining a permit and paying a fee in Teriberka Nature Park.
