Barvikha combines castle history with a cultural programme ranging from festivals to creative activities. Baroness Mayendorf’s castle was built in 1885 in the style of medieval knights’ castles. After the war, a trade union club was established there, considered the predecessor of today’s Barvikha Cultural and Leisure Centre. Nearby, you’ll also find the architecture of the Zachatyevsky Convent and the Norway Park rope park. This gives you different ways to plan your visit: around historical building periods, specific cultural events or a weather-dependent outing.

Mayendorf Castle and its history

Baroness Mayendorf’s castle was built in 1885 by architect Boitsov. Its connection to medieval knights’ castles describes its style, not its actual age. After the war, the trade union club of the Barvikha Sanatorium was established in the castle. This club was the predecessor of the Barvikha Cultural and Leisure Centre. The history of the building thus also leads to the origins of a cultural institution that is still active today.

Monastery architecture in Barvikha

The estate of the Zachatyevsky Convent in Barvikha includes the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God. The wooden church and the buildings on the convent estate were built to a design by church architect A. A. Latkov in the Russian Art Nouveau style. Construction of the wooden church began in 1910. The castle draws on the style of medieval knights’ castles, while the convent complex reflects Russian Art Nouveau, offering two distinct architectural points of reference.

The revival of the Barvikha convent estate began in the mid-1990s. Construction of a new estate for the Zachatyevsky Convent, designed by architect S. Obolensky, began in Barvikha, 400 metres from the historic site. Along with the start of construction on the wooden church in 1910, this history offers a glimpse into different phases in the development of the convent estate.

A cultural programme for a range of interests

The Barvikha Cultural and Leisure Centre hosts more than 300 events each year. The programme includes celebrations, festivals, creative gatherings, concerts, stage performances, competitions, and games and entertainment programmes; professional artists also take part. The range spans everything from stage productions to activities with more opportunities for participation.

The centre also runs 25 creative and leisure clubs and studios for adults and children. For families, these ongoing activities offer a different way to plan a visit to the cultural centre than attending a single concert or celebration. Before making plans, it’s best to check the centre’s current listings to see which events and programmes coincide with your travel dates; individual event dates may change.

Coordinate leisure activities with your travel dates

The Norway Park rope park is located near Barvikha. It is open to visitors daily, but operations may change depending on the weather. If you’re planning a visit, check the latest conditions in advance. Unlike the rope park, where the weather plays a part, planning around a specific cultural event depends primarily on its date.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Barvikha, it may help to decide first what you’d most like to focus on during your stay. If you want to attend a festival, concert or stage performance, you can plan your travel dates around the events calendar. If you’re mainly interested in local architectural history, the different styles and periods provide a clear thread to follow: from the castle’s construction in 1885, through the start of church construction in 1910, to the revival of the convent estate from the mid-1990s onwards. This lets you plan your trip around your own interests, rather than treating cultural events, architectural history and weather-dependent leisure activities as the same kind of outing.
