Historic churches, fine art and a distinctive row of houses shape the cultural themes through which Dankov can be discovered. The Tikhvin Cathedral tells a story of construction, repurposing and reopening; the art gallery offers its own focus on Soviet art and works in several genres. Then there is Pochtovaya Street, with its stone and wooden houses and intricate openwork carvings. When planning a vacation rental in Dankov, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus on church and city history, art, or both.

Church History and Remembrance

Construction of the six-altar Tikhvin Cathedral began in Dankov on August 16, 1861. It was built on the site where the Icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin had been miraculously found. The cathedral was completed in 1872. During the Soviet era, it served as a collection point for waste glass, a dormitory and a club; in 1994, the city’s main church reopened to worshippers. These different uses add significant historical changes to its architectural history. If you would like to visit the church interior, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Dankov Pokrovsky Monastery for Men is also part of the city’s religious history; it was destroyed in 1930. The Glory Memorial offers a different focus: it commemorates local residents who fell in the Great Patriotic War. The memorial depicts a lowered victory banner bearing plaques with the names of soldiers from Dankov who fell. In this way, it connects the broader act of remembrance with the naming of people from the city.

Painting in Dankov

The Dankov Art Gallery opened on May 30, 1968, in the foyer of the District House of Culture. It is named after Andrey Ivanovich Plotnov, a Meritorious Artist of the RSFSR. Plotnov initiated the creation of the first district-level art gallery in the USSR. The gallery includes a permanent exhibition of Soviet artists.

Dankov’s “Little Tretyakov Gallery” displays fine art from the USSR and the Russian Federation. Visitors can see original works by painters, graphic artists and sculptors, including works by Konchalovsky, Grabar, Plastov and Stozharov. The range of art forms and artists offers art lovers specific points of interest for their visit. If you are coming to see particular works, check the current exhibition in advance.

Historic Streets and Houses

Pochtovaya Street is notable for its historic character. Large, two-story stone mansions stand alongside smaller stone and wooden houses, often decorated with intricate openwork carvings. The variety of sizes and building materials shapes the streetscape, while the carved details add fine touches to the facades.

Another architectural monument stands in the historic part of Dankov: a merchant’s house dating from the second half of the 18th century is located on K. Marx Street, formerly called Moskovskaya Street. Together with Pochtovaya Street, it offers a glimpse of the different scales of historic development, from a single older merchant’s house to a street of large mansions and smaller homes.

If painting is your main focus, current exhibition details are important; if you plan to visit the cathedral, check today’s visiting arrangements. The houses and streets, meanwhile, offer an architectural perspective on Dankov. You can tailor your search for a vacation rental to the kind of city discovery that matters most to you during your stay.
