Priozerskiy District: Ladoga, Korela and waterways
Accommodation in Priozerskiy District
Priozerskiy District combines a skerry-lined Lake Ladoga coast with history and different ways to travel on the water. The Korela Fortress stands in Priozersk; near Petrovskoye, memorial sites focus on the Soviet-Finnish War. There are also rafting trips on the Vuoksa. The landscape, culture and activities thus offer different highlights for a stay in the district.
Lake Ladoga shore and skerries
North of Priozersk, the shore of Lake Ladoga is indented by skerries. Numerous islands, massive rocks and passages characterize this stretch. The lake is therefore more than just a large expanse of water here: the distinctive forms of its coastline also give the landscape its character. If you would like to make nature a focus of your vacation, these features of the shoreline offer a concrete starting point. When choosing a holiday apartment, this can give your trip a different focus from whether fortress history or the history of the war is your main interest.
Fortress and memorial sites
The Korela Fortress, also known as Keksholm and Käkisalmi, is located on Detinets Island in Priozersk. It dates from the 14th century and is considered a monument of Novgorodian defensive architecture. Its island location, age and architectural classification make it a clearly defined historical subject. The memorial sites near Petrovskoye offer a different focus: they are connected with the Soviet-Finnish War.
Near Petrovskoye, the memorial complex of the Museum of the Soviet-Finnish War includes 150 meters of restored and newly equipped trenches, ditches, machine-gun positions and rifle pits. The “Na Keksgolmskom napravlenii” Museum, dedicated to the events of the Soviet-Finnish War, is also located on the grounds of the “Dacha” country club near Petrovskoye. If you would like to include cultural history in your vacation plans, these sites differ distinctly from the fortress in Priozersk.
Water journeys and seasonal differences
Priozerskiy District is extensively used for water journeys by kayak, rowing boat and sailboat. Rafting trips run through rapids on the Vuoksa. This means that different kinds of water travel are available side by side: trips in various types of boats and rafting on a named river. In winter, people also travel across the district on buers. This activity is explicitly seasonal and offers a contrast to the water journeys and rafting trips mentioned above. When planning your vacation, you can therefore consider whether a boat trip, rafting on the Vuoksa or a winter buer ride would make the right highlight.
Another cultural connection in the travel region
In the wider travel region, the Konevsky Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God adds another cultural dimension. It was founded in 1393 on Konevets Island in Lake Ladoga. Its founding year and island location provide another historical point of interest in the wider travel region, alongside the Korela Fortress and the sites dedicated to the Soviet-Finnish War. If you would also like to base your search for a holiday apartment on regional cultural themes, you can include this connection in your travel plans.
