Surgutsky District: the Ob, nature reserves and Khanty culture
Accommodation in Surgutsky District
In Surgutsky District, travel interests range from the Ob and its channels to Yugansky Nature Reserve and museums in Russkinskaya and Ugut. Nature, seasonal activities and insights into the culture of the Trom-Agan Khanty offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Nature reserve and river landscape
Yugansky State Nature Reserve lies in the south of Surgutsky District, between the Bolshoy Yugan and Maly Yugan rivers. Established in 1982, it covers 648,636 hectares. Its purpose is to preserve West Siberian middle-taiga biogeocenoses—communities of landscape and nature—in their original state. The reserve’s wetlands also help sustain a population of wild reindeer belonging to a rare forest subspecies. The focus is therefore both on characteristic habitats and on their role in protecting these animals.
The Ob crosses Surgutsky District for 275 kilometres from east to west. Numerous channels branch off and rejoin the Ob farther downstream. The district’s rivers are suitable for rafting as well as boat and kayak trips; sport fishing is practised on rivers and lakes. Those interested in water-based activities can thus experience the landscape differently from visitors to the nature reserve.
Museums and Khanty culture
The Museum of Nature and Man in Russkinskaya combines exhibitions on the nature of Surgutsky District with ethnography of the Trom-Agan Khanty. The ethnographic hall explores the traditional culture of the eastern Khanty’s Trom-Agan group. Exhibits include items used in hunting and crafts, clothing, household goods and means of transport, as well as objects related to religious beliefs. The themes range from everyday practical life to the community’s worldviews.
The museum’s open-air ethnographic complex includes traditional Khanty homes and utility buildings. Visitors can sample national dishes and warm themselves by the chuwal. If this experience is part of your plans, check directly in advance for visitor options. Near Russkinskaya, the Yuvont-Kot ethnic camp also offers insights into the traditional way of life of a Khanty clan and the culture of the North’s Indigenous population.
Ugut offers another way to explore local history: the Ugut Museum of Local Lore named after P. S. Bakhlykov runs walking and driving tours of the old and new villages. In Russkinskaya, the focus is on ethnographic collections and an open-air complex, while the tours in Ugut explore the village’s two parts.
Seasonal activities in Lyamina
At the Lyaminskiye Berega sports and tourism base in the settlement of Lyamina, activities vary by season. In summer, options include fishing on the Ob, an inflatable obstacle course, cycling and walking excursions, quad biking and a football pitch. In winter, there are snow hills, snowmobile rides and tubing. Equipment available for hire includes tubes, skis and winter bikes. The range spans river activities, winter rides and activities at the base. Before planning your trip, check which seasonal options are available for your travel dates.
Ugut as a gateway to the nature reserve
To visit Yugansky Nature Reserve, you need to reach the rural settlement of Ugut in Surgutsky District, where the reserve’s central administration is located. Ugut can only be reached by road from Pyt-Yakh. The route is 107 kilometres long, with sections that are asphalted and others paved with concrete slabs. As road conditions can change, confirm the arrangements with the reserve administration before setting off. The Ugut Museum’s tours are a separate offering and take visitors through the old and new villages.
