Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug brings together nature, cultural history and civic heritage for a trip. In Khanty-Mansiysk, a nature park and several museums take centre stage; Surgut adds monuments commemorating the city's founding and its explorers. You can choose the focus that is of particular interest to you and your family.

Nature and environmental education in Khanty-Mansiysk

The Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park in Khanty-Mansiysk protects especially valuable natural complexes, rare plants and animals, pristine forests and unique landscapes. It is located at the confluence of the Ob and Irtysh rivers. Nature and the river landscape are therefore a distinctive focus for anyone interested in the region's scenery.

The nature park also aims to provide conditions for regulated recreation and environmental education. For families who want to explore nature together, this focus combines conservation with environmental education.

Museums: history, geology and traditions

The collections of the Museum of Nature and Man comprise more than 100,000 records of the history and culture of Yugra. The size of the collection and its cultural-historical focus distinguish the museum from the geological subjects also represented in Khanty-Mansiysk.

The Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas displays minerals, materials relating to geological exploration, palaeontological finds from the area, and equipment used by geologists and oil workers. The focus is on both the finds and the materials and equipment used in the work. When choosing which museum to visit, you can therefore consider cultural history and geology as distinct interests.

The Torum Maa open-air museum displays reconstructions of dwellings and rituals of the Indigenous peoples of the North. An educational excursion follows a hunting trail and covers hunting equipment used by Indigenous peoples. This adds a subject connected with dwellings, rituals and hunting to the collections in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Surgut: city founders and explorers

A monument to the city's founders in Surgut commemorates four figures: Prince Fyodor Boryatinsky, voivode Vladimir Onichkov, a Cossack carpenter and an unnamed priest. The bronze group thus depicts named individuals alongside figures identified by their respective roles.

A monument honouring explorers was also unveiled in Surgut. The two monuments have different focuses: one commemorates the city's founders and the roles depicted alongside them, while the other honours explorers.

The National Centre “Russia” opened in Khanty-Mansiysk on 16 December 2025.
