Zhizdrinsky District: Nature, Church Architecture and Local History
Accommodation in Zhizdrinsky District
Tree species, a karst lake and the local history of Schisdra give Zhizdrinsky District a range of distinctive features. The Dendropark Schisdra is known for its preserved trees and small meadow fragments; the karst lake Besdonnoye lies near the village of Ozyorskaya. In Schisdra, a church newly built in 1995 and the local history museum complement the natural attractions with architecture and history. When looking for a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
Trees and plants at the Dendropark Schisdra
The Dendropark Schisdra was designated a natural monument of regional significance on 14 January 1985 and covers 1.75 hectares. Its present-day vegetation includes preserved Siberian larches and pines, oaks, ash trees, poplars, and other trees and shrubs planted between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Small fragments of mesophilic meadows and ruderal plant communities occur along the roadsides. The park can therefore be described not only by its individual tree species: its different plant communities and the long period over which plantings took place are also part of its character.
A total of 127 vascular plant species have been recorded in the dendropark. Four are listed in the Red Data Book of Kaluga Oblast: field maple, purging buckthorn, European spindle, and sweet violet. In addition, 37 species are non-native, including 13 invasive species. These figures give the diversity of the plant life a more tangible dimension and complement the history of the historic plantings with an overview of the species found in the park.
Karst lake near Ozyorskaya
Another natural monument in Zhizdrinsky District is Lake Besdonnoye, a karst lake near the village of Ozyorskaya. It is located in Kaluga Oblast and is of regional significance. Alongside the dendropark in Schisdra, it offers a distinct natural attraction associated with another place in the district.
Church architecture spanning two periods
The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Schisdra was newly built in 1995 on the site of an earlier Pokrovsky Church. Its exterior combines elements of traditional Russian church architecture with modern architecture. The predecessor was a stone church built in 1877 by the city community and donors to commemorate the saving of Emperor Alexander II’s life.
The earlier church had five altars: in honour of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, Venerable Mary of Egypt, Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Apostles Peter and Paul, and Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk. Details about the predecessor provide historical context for today’s church without conflating the two buildings: the 1877 church stood on this site, while the present church was newly built in 1995.
History and nature at the local history museum
The galleries of the Schisdra Local History Museum focus on different historical themes. The history gallery covers the history of Schisdra District from the Stone Age onwards, early settlements in 1146, and the peasant life of Schisdra’s residents. The military history gallery focuses on the period from 1941 to 1945 and the district’s 22-month occupation.
The “Present Day” gallery begins with a nature corner displaying stuffed birds and animals from the Schisdra area. As well as the broad sweep of history and the wartime period, visitors can also see animals from the region at the local history museum. Those interested in the history of the area will find several ways into the subject here—from early settlements and everyday peasant life to a clearly defined period of the 20th century.
