Kyshtym City: Lakes, Mountains and Stone Gates
Accommodation in Kyshtym City
Kyshtym City combines the rolling terrain of the Urals with a lake, wooded heights and striking rocks. It is also home to a regional folk art festival near Sugomak Cave. This offers different options for planning a trip: nature and water, outdoor activities in the mountains or a cultural event.
A landscape of lakes and rocks
Kyshtym City District lies on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains; its terrain is shaped by mountains, hills and lowlands. One notable natural feature is Lake Sugomak, at the foot of Mount Sugomak. It is a hydrological natural monument of regional significance and serves as a source of drinking water for district residents. This means that one place brings together a designated natural monument and a resource of practical importance to the local population.
The rock formation «Kamennye Vorota» stands out for the oval opening in its centre. It is also known as «Chertovy Vorota» or «Skala Drakon» and is located in Kyshtym City District. The heights of the two mountains offer another point of reference in the landscape: Mount Sugomak is 591 metres high and Mount Egoza is 607 metres high; they are the highest mountains in the area. Mount Egoza is characterised by very hilly terrain, dense mixed forest and many rare plants. The «Egoza» ski complex is also located there.
Outdoor activities and culture
Mount Sugomak is near Kyshtym. The ascent takes less than an hour, is considered easy and is suitable for children too. There are also routes up the mountain in winter. This makes the shorter climb a distinct option for outdoor activity, while the elevations and landscape of Mount Egoza show another side of the region.
One cultural highlight is the regional folk art festival «Russkiy khorovod». It takes place annually on June 12, Russia Day, in a meadow near Sugomak Cave. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current event schedule.
A look at Chelyabinsk Oblast
Chelyabinsk Oblast is known as the «Land of 3,000 Lakes»; there are three national parks in the oblast. Taganay National Park lies in the western part, in the Taganay mountain massif in the Southern Urals. Its landscapes include rocky peaks, stone rivers, mountain streams, taiga and tundra.
One example in this regional setting is the «Ves Taganai za 600 shagov» ecological hiking trail. It is just over 1.5 kilometres long and passes through scenic areas of «Chernaya Skala» as well as typical natural features of the national park. The trail is paved, has a viewing platform and is wheelchair accessible. Check the current conditions before visiting.
