Ust'-Koksa: Nature Trail and Altai Culture
Accommodation in Ust'-Koksa
Ust'-Koksa lies at the confluence of the Koksa and Katun rivers. The village brings together river scenery and insights into the nature and culture of Altai. A special point of interest is the central estate of the Katunski Biosphere Reserve: its grounds include a nature trail, and the visitor center offers information and environmental education. You can get to know the village through both its landscape and its hands-on experiences.
Experience Altai with All Your Senses
The nature trail “V gosti k lesu. Tropa chuvstv” introduces visitors to the wild nature of Altai through sight, touch, smell, and sound. Instead of simply looking at their surroundings, visitors encounter them through several sensory paths. The trail’s stations include the “Golosa lesa” installation, featuring animal calls from the reserve, and the “Zapovednye zapakhi” aroma installation, with impressions of aromatic plants and fragrance vials.
The trail ends at the “Traditsii Altaya” ethnographic setting. There, visitors can learn about the daily life and traditions of the Altai people and play traditional games. Another way to explore nature themes through play is the “V garmonii s prirodoi” eco-platform: children learn about the reserve’s animals and plants and how to treat the natural environment with care. Staff from the environmental education department have also developed quests for children and adults to complement a visit to the trail. Ask the reserve about the current availability of these quests.
Visitor Center, Reserve, and Altai Culture
At the central estate, visitors can find information about the Katunski Biosphere Reserve and take part in environmental education events. Films and presentations about the nature of Altai and the reserve are shown in the visitor center’s main hall. This adds information and talks to the impressions of the nature trail, offering another way to explore the landscape.
If you wish to visit the protected area of the Katunski Reserve, you will need a permit, which must be issued at the reserve’s central estate in Ust'-Koksa. Check the reserve’s current visitor regulations before your trip.
The Ethno-Ecological Museum of Altai Culture displays traditional clothing, household items and musical instruments, as well as equipment used for hunting and livestock farming by the Altai people. It is open seasonally from May to October. The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God is an Orthodox spiritual center for the district and is also located in Ust'-Koksa.
The Village’s Green Spaces
Koksinskaya Roscha is more like a park; in spring, its white-flowering bird cherry trees define the scenery. Local residents and tourists staying in Ust'-Koksa enjoy walking there. The grove extends beyond the village: it begins roughly in the area of the local electricity utility and stretches well past the exit from Ust'-Koksa. If you use the grove to orient yourself, this extent is a helpful distinction between a local walk and the wider landscape.
A Starting Point for Destinations in Ust'-Koksinskiy District
Ust'-Koksa is the starting point for numerous tourist routes to the Katunski Range, the Multinskiye and Schavlinskiye lakes, and waterfalls. These destinations are part of the wider Ust'-Koksinskiy district and should not be confused with the attractions in the village itself. From many points in the district, you can see the Belukha massif, including its northern face and main peaks.
The Multinskiye Lakes also showcase the diversity of the regional landscape: they form a cascade of large bodies of water in the western part of the Katun Mountains at an altitude of at least 1,700 meters. The Middle and Lower Multinskiye Lakes are connected by the Shumy watercourse; this stretch is especially popular with tourists. Lower Multinskoye Lake is the third-largest lake in the Katun Mountains and is 21.5 meters deep.
In the Ust'-Koksinskiy district, the Katun Reserve can be visited in organized groups or independently. In the Ust'-Koksinskiy district, visitors must follow the paths and routes of the Katun Reserve specified in their permit. The routes “Starinnoy tropoy staroverov,” “Kuraganskoye koltso,” and “Katunskiye vysokogorya” may only be visited with instructors or mountain guides listed in the Unified Federal Register of Instructors and Mountain Guides. Check the current rules before planning a route.
For rafting, the options range from calm stretches in the Uymon Valley considered suitable for families to challenging rapids on the Upper Katun in the Ak-kem gorge. If rafting is part of your travel plans, check current operators and conditions.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between the village itself and destinations in the Ust'-Koksinskiy district: Would you like to focus mainly on the nature trail, visitor center, and local cultural and nature attractions, or are you primarily planning routes and activities in the wider region? Choose your location based on that focus.
