S. Manzherok: Mineral Spring, Church and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in S. Manzherok
In S. Manzherok, you’ll encounter traces of both nature and culture: a mineral spring lies on the edge of the settlement, a small 19th-century church stands in the village, and an archaeological complex includes various types of sites. Nearby are Lake Manzherokskoe ozero and the rapids on the Katun. When planning your visit, you can therefore decide how to balance local history, landscapes and seasonal activities on the water.
Mineral Spring on the Edge of the Settlement
Manzherok Mineral Spring lies on the edge of the settlement, 30 metres from the Chuyskiy trakt highway. It is a natural monument of republican significance. Its location and protected status make it a distinctive natural landmark of the settlement. Those interested in local landscape features will find a specific point of interest here outside the centre.
Church and Archaeological Traces
The small old Church of St. Euthymius in Manzherok was built in 1875 by a local merchant. It was closed for a time during the Soviet era. A report dated January 17, 2026, says that the church has been restored and is operational again.
The Manzherok archaeological complex comprises 19 sites, including burial grounds, settlements, a fortified settlement and workshops. Part of the complex lies on the right bank of the Katun; the Chultukov log burial mound field is also part of the complex. An ancient fortified settlement lies on the southeastern edge of the village. Remains of ditches and ramparts have been preserved along its perimeter.
There are therefore two distinct historical themes to explore: a church building with a precisely dated year of construction, and an archaeological complex with several types of sites. The specific year, 1875, and the diversity of the 19 sites give each theme its own focus.
Lake and Rapids Nearby
The Manzherokskie porogi rapids lie about two kilometres downstream from the centre of Manzherok. Rafters and kayakers go there in spring and summer. At high water, the rapids are considered among the most dangerous on the Katun and are classified as Category IV. Activities and difficulty levels therefore depend on the season and river conditions.
Lake Manzherokskoe ozero is shallow and warms up well in summer. It is recognised as a natural monument for its beauty and the rare plants listed in the Red Data Book that grow there. The lake has a beach with sun loungers and a rental service for recreational catamarans. There is a car park, and part of the area has been developed. The best view of the lake is from a cable car; which cable car is meant is not specified. Check the condition of facilities and services before visiting. The shallow, warm summer lake and the rapids, which are rated for high-water conditions, represent different aquatic landscapes and activity options.
Choose the Right Focus
If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Manzherok, your preferred focus for the stay can help you choose where to stay: would you like to focus on the church and archaeological sites, or are you mainly interested in the nearby waters? For river activities, the season and water level are part of the planning; for the lake, the defining features are its natural-monument status, beach and recreational catamarans.
