Altai culture, a hidden high-mountain landscape and traces of history give Ust'-Kanskiy rayon a distinctive character. Its attractions range from collections on the culture of the Altai people and the history of Ak Dyang to a lake that cannot be seen even from nearby on the ridge. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether museums and cultural history or distinctive landforms should be the main focus.

Altai Culture and Historical Traces

In the village of Ust-Kan, the I. V. Shodoyev Local History Museum is a branch of the A. V. Anokhin National Museum. Its collections and exhibitions present the material and spiritual culture of the Altai people, as well as the history of Ust-Kanskiy rayon. The museum therefore brings together two perspectives: the culture of the Altai people and the history of the rayon.

In Yakonur, there is a museum dedicated to Alexei Kalkin, an Altai kaichi and expert on ancient Altai epics. It offers a different focus from the local history museum in Ust-Kan: the emphasis is on a specific individual associated with the ancient epics, while the collections in Ust-Kan present culture and regional history. If you are interested in cultural topics, you can take these different focuses into account when choosing where to stay.

The Tereng Valley is another cultural point of interest. Remains of stone ritual structures associated with the “Ak Dyang” faith, whose name means “white, pure faith,” have survived there to this day. In 1904, the local shepherd Chet Chelpanov began preaching this new religion in the valley. Here, a named place, surviving structures and a specific year come together. This distinguishes the history of Ak Dyang from the museum topics in Ust-Kan and Yakonur.

Altitude, a Hidden Lake and Orientation

Potaynoye Lake lies in a crater-like depression on the Bashchelak Range, 1,850 metres above sea level. Its distinctive feature is its limited visibility: the lake cannot be seen from below, and it remains hidden even from nearby on the ridge. Its altitude and hidden position together shape the character of this high-mountain lake.

In the upper reaches of the Charysh River, there is a mining excavation attributed to prehistoric miners. It adds a historical trace to the landscape, while its interpretation remains explicitly an attribution. Natural features and the past thus offer different points of interest: one perspective focuses on the lake’s location, the other on an early mining excavation by the river.

The Ust-Kan Cave and Yabogan Pass also provide specific points of reference. The cave is 3.5 kilometres from the village of Ust-Kan, on Mount Beliy Kamen and on the right bank of the Charysh. Yabogan Pass, also known as Ayalu, lies on the route from the Chuysky Trakt to Ust-Kan, at an altitude of 1,492 metres. The cave’s location is described in relation to the village, mountain and river; for the pass, the named route and altitude are the main points.

Culture or Landscape as the Main Focus

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide in advance which themes you want to shape your trip. If you want to explore the material and spiritual culture of the Altai people or ancient epics, the museums in Ust-Kan and Yakonur offer different points of connection. The history of Ak Dyang, by contrast, is associated with the Tereng Valley. This lets you distinguish between several cultural interests rather than treating them as a single excursion destination.

If landscape and geographical orientation are your main interests, Potaynoye Lake, Ust-Kan Cave, the mining excavation and the pass each offer a different point of reference. The lake is characterised by its location on the ridge and its limited visibility; for the cave, its location on Beliy Kamen and its distance from the village are key; for the pass, the route and altitude are specified. Choose the location of your holiday rental based on the places and themes that matter most to your trip. This makes choosing where to stay part of your planning, rather than simply searching for an accommodation name.
