Shebalinsky District tells its natural and cultural history through very different images: at Kamyshla Waterfall, in two clear cascades; in the Ust-Seminsky landscape area, among birch-pine forest and endangered plants; and in the archaeological traces of Ust-Sema. If you are looking for a vacation rental, it is best to first decide what matters most to you: are you mainly interested in landscapes, plants or the history of the places? These specific locations can help you tailor your search to your travel interests.

Natural Monuments and Plant Life

Kamyshla Waterfall is twelve meters high and forms two distinct cascades. As a natural monument of republican significance, it is a prominent natural attraction in the district. Its two tiers give the waterfall a clear profile, while its height provides a sense of scale.

The Ust-Seminsky landscape area offers a different perspective on nature and is also a natural monument of republican significance. Its mountain landscape is covered in birch-pine forest, where relict and endangered plants grow. The two natural attractions are therefore quite distinct: one centers on the cascades of a waterfall, while the other is a landscape shaped by forest and distinctive plants.

Botanical Garden in Kamlak

The Botanical Garden in Kamlak is home to more than 1,500 different plant species from throughout the Altai Mountains. Unlike the relict and endangered plants in the Ust-Seminsky landscape area, the focus here is on a botanical collection. You can walk around the Botanical Garden with or without a guide. There is also an ecological trail where you can walk barefoot. Conditions on the trail may vary, so check current operating details and the condition of the path before setting out on such a walk.

Church History and Archaeology

The first church in Shebalino was built in 1899: the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, a wooden building with one altar. It was destroyed in 1929. Its logs were subsequently used to build the district cultural center. Shebalino is also home to the house museum of merchant A. S. Popov, one of the town’s first settlers. Together, these details offer two different glimpses into Shebalino’s history: its early church and one of its first settlers.

The multilayered settlement of Ust-Sema was discovered in the early 1960s by B. Kh. Kadikov, a staff member of the local history museum in Biysk. Archaeological investigations uncovered around 400 square meters of the settlement and approximately ten thousand objects from the Stone Age. The region’s history thus spans from the stories of Shebalino to the Stone Age finds at Ust-Sema.

Water Tourism and Choosing a Location

At the confluence of the Sema, a gathering for water tourists from Altai and Siberia was traditionally held during the May holidays for more than 30 years. This is a different point of interest from the natural monuments and archaeological finds: here, the focus is a water tourism tradition. If you want to plan your trip around such a gathering, check the specific event dates in advance.

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to clarify your interests: are you more interested in the Botanical Garden, the mountain forest and its plants, the waterfall, or the history of the towns and settlements? Kamlak, Ust-Seminsky, Shebalino and Ust-Sema are specific locations to consider. When searching, check how the locations of potential vacation rentals relate to your personal priorities. This way, you can choose a location based on the things that truly matter to your trip.
