In Mamontovskiy District, nature and culture can be combined in one trip. The natural monument Lake Gorkoye offers recreation by the water; in Mamontovo, you’ll find a local history museum, a memorial complex and a rose garden with a history dating back to the 1980s. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether water, protected landscapes or local history should shape your stay.

Lakes and protected landscapes

The natural monument “Lake Gorkoye” is located mostly in Novichikhinsky District and partly in Mamontovskiy District. This distribution is an important point of reference when planning your trip: most of the natural monument lies in the neighbouring district, while part of it is in Mamontovskiy District. Recreation at the lake includes the use of lake water and mud, as well as swimming. The protected area’s rules apply. Lake Gorkoye is also attractive to kitesurfing enthusiasts. This means different interests can be catered to by the water, without promising the same experience.

The Mamontovsky State Nature Reserve offers another perspective on nature. It was established in 1963 in the Kasmala ribbon forest, within Mamontovskiy District, and covers 8,000 hectares. It protects the ribbon forest ecosystem and its lake system. The reserve also includes habitats for moose, roe deer, squirrels, hares, foxes and kolonok weasels, as well as swans and river and diving ducks. Those interested in landscapes and their wildlife will find a different focus here than at the lake’s recreation areas.

History and culture in Mamontovo

The Mamontovsky Local History Museum in Mamontovo displays two-thirds of its collection in six permanent exhibitions. The collection comprises more than 31,500 items in total. The museum is one of the largest district-level historical and local history museums in Altai Krai. Its exhibitions and collection offer visitors a cultural perspective distinct from the district’s nature attractions.

The memory of those killed in the war is also visible in Mamontovo. A memorial complex commemorating those who fell in the Second World War opened in 1980 in the park at Victory Square. The complex’s memorial park contains 150 commemorative markers bearing the names of 376 Mamontovo residents who fell in the war. The focus is therefore not only on the historical event but also on the names of people from the town. The museum and memorial park offer different ways to engage with history: one through an extensive collection, the other as a place of remembrance.

The gardens offer another facet: in the 1980s, a rose garden and an arboretum with continuous flowering were established in Mamontovo. More than 40 rose varieties have acclimatized in the rose garden. This world of gardens and plants adds another topic to explore in Mamontovo, alongside the museum and memorial sites.
