Strejnicu: Church, Tumulus and Aviation History

Strejnicu combines a specific sacred connection to the village with the history of aviation operations. The village is home to the Orthodox church “Biserica Sf. Ierah Nicolae” and the Troiță Nicolae Iorga. North of the village lies the Aerodrom of Aeroclubul Gh. Bănciulescu – Strejnicu; southwest of it is the Tumulul de la Strejnicu - T4. Thus, architectural history, an archaeologically designated terrain feature and the Romanian aviation tradition come together within a close geographical context.

Culture

The Orthodox church “Biserica Sf. Ierah Nicolae” is located in Strejnicu and is dated to 1864. It therefore forms part of the architectural history of the 19th century. The Troiță Nicolae Iorga is also located in the village. Both named places are within Strejnicu, but differ in their function and form: the church is a religious building, while the Troiță appears as an independent local landmark. The Tumulul de la Strejnicu - T4 lies 250 metres southwest of Strejnicu. The grounds and the Aerodrom of Aeroclubul Gh. Bănciulescu – Strejnicu, by contrast, are located north-northeast of the village. Access to Aeroclubul Gh. Bănciulescu – Strejnicu is via the DJ 129 from the DN 1A. The DJ 129 connects the Ploiești-Vest district with Strejnicu. For travelling to a flight or parachuting activity, the road name, starting point and destination name are therefore part of the practical preparation. History

The “Gheorghe Banciulescu” Aeroclub was founded in 1936 to promote aviation and train pilots and technicians. The flight school in Strejnic reopened in 1948. In 1952, training for sport parachutists began in Strejnic. The three years mark successive stages: the reopening of the flight school followed its founding and its mandate to promote aviation and training, and the start of sport parachutist training came later.

Aviation

The activities of Aeroclubul Gh. Bănciulescu – Strejnicu include theoretical and practical flight training as well as theoretical and practical parachuting training using light civil aircraft. The distinction between theory and practice applies to both areas of training. At Aerodromul Strejnic, the “Gheorghe Banciulescu” Aeroclub also provides navigation services and offers flight instruction. Competitions are also organised at the same aerodrome.
