Drăgăneasa – Oil History, Church Construction and Crafts

The Sonda 1 Sospiro well was the first eruptive oil production of its kind in Romania from 1883 to 1885. In 1863, the first oil well in Prahova County was drilled in Drăgăneasa using the cable-tool drilling method. The area around Drăgăneasa is associated with significant oil deposits. Oil production in the area around Drăgăneasa began at the end of the 19th century.

Culture and History

The Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul Church in Drăgăneasa was established in 1940 from a building. This building had been donated by the family of Ioan and Olga P. Comănescu. The Orthodox Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul Church – Drăgăneasa Parish is recorded as a church in Drăgăneasa.

Local folk-art traditions in Drăgăneasa include woodworking. The local traditional houses include numerous buildings. These buildings feature openwork wooden decorations on their eaves and verandas. Hand-sewn traditional blouses, known as ii, are part of the local craft tradition. Basket weaving is one of the local handicraft and folk-art practices that continue to exist, although it is practiced sporadically.

The Drăgăneasa parish lies in a Subcarpathian depression. The Drăgăneasa and Provița rivers meet at this location. Drăgăneasa is one of three villages in the municipality of Provița de Jos. The settlements lie along valleys and access roads. They are situated among wooded hills, orchards, pastures, and agricultural land.

The landscape of the municipality therefore features several clearly identified elements side by side: wooded hills, orchards, pastures, and agricultural land. Getting Around the Village

Regular regional bus services operate on the Câmpina–Poiana Câmpina–Drăgăneasa route and back. At the entrance to Drăgăneasa, there is a spring enclosed by the municipality beside the road. This spring has a publicly accessible water point. Maintenance work was carried out in Drăgăneasa Park on July 2, 2026.
