Săvinești: Terraces, Churches and Industrial History

Săvinești presents two distinctive sides within a small area: a landscape shaped by river terraces and a local history in which church building, industrial production and public celebrations stand side by side.

Churches as Local History

In the south of Săvinești stands the Sf. Voievozi Church on the river Bistriţa’s second terrace. Its consecration on 27 September 1964 was the result of an eleven-year joint effort: members of the Săvinești community contributed money and materials and provided voluntary labour. Thus, not only the church building but also the community’s participation form part of this chapter of local history.

An older architectural trace is the Învierea Domnului Church. It was built in the 1820s from beams on a stone base. Wood and stone therefore represent two different historical construction methods that stand side by side within the local church history. For those interested in culture, Sf. Voievozi and Învierea Domnului are two specific church buildings with clearly distinguishable periods of origin.

Terraces and River Areas

The municipality’s relief consists predominantly of extensive, approximately level terraces. It is only slightly structured and scarcely hilly. The terraces slope gently from north to south. The transition between the floodplains of the Bistriţa and Cracău and the 12- and 35-metre terraces is gradual and without significant morphological breaks. River areas, terrain levels and the gently sloping plains thus form the essential landscape features.

When planning excursions in rural or mountainous areas, current route conditions and traffic plans are among the details that can be checked before departure. The specific landscape structure with its terraces remains independent of this as a distinct geographical character.

Industry and the World of Work

The Săvinești industrial platform was established in 1957. Synthetic yarns and fibres as well as chemical products were to be manufactured there. At times, almost 20,000 employees worked on the platform, including construction workers. The facility thus represents a chapter of local history shaped by industrial manufacturing, large numbers of employees and the world of work.

Destinations in the Surrounding Region

The Dealul Bălan hill lies in the immediate vicinity of Săvinești. In the wider surrounding region are the Mănăstire Bistriţa Monastery and the Murgoci, Vârful Vadurile and Muntele Goşman mountains. The geographical classification therefore ranges from a single hill in the immediate vicinity to a monastery and several mountains in the wider surrounding region.

The Easter celebrations in Săvinești include local events with performances, markets and icon exhibitions. In addition, the Rural Arts Fest in Săvinești was described as its second edition.
