Suciu de Sus – Bronze Age, Tibles Mountains and Living Traditions

In Suciu de Sus lies the archaeological settlement “Aşezarea din epoca bronzului de la Suciu de Jos - Pe Şes”. Its dating extends back to the Late Bronze Age.
The Arcer Tibles Nature Reserve encompasses the high central area of the Tibles Mountains between Arcer Peak, at 1,829 metres, and Tibles Peak, at 1,840 metres.
Culture
The traditional costume style “zadii sucenești” is named after Suciu de Sus. It reached the Țara Lăpușului area via Suciu de Sus. The “Sfânta Treime” Monastery is located in Breaza and is one of the tourist attractions of the Suciu de Sus commune. The old wooden church in Larga is designated as a UNESCO monument. “Cununa anului” is a custom several centuries old. It is practised during the Easter period in Suciu de Sus, in the Țara Lăpușului area. The old agricultural custom “claca la secerat” was revived in Suciu de Sus. Locals in traditional clothing reenacted the former communal grain harvest.
At the exit from Suciu de Sus, a modern agro-food market is located on Ulița lui Cușner. The market stands on the site of the former fairground. In 2024, it was open or operating on Saturdays. At Zestrea Suciului, food is prepared over a wood fire, in a brick oven or in a cauldron. The ingredients for the dishes come from the villages of Suciu de Sus and Suciu de Jos. The market therefore combines a contemporary agro-food function with the historic site of the former fairground.
In the commune of Suciu de Sus, the third edition of the Buffalo Festival was announced for 16 August in Suciu de Jos. “Pă Obrejă” was designated as the event area. A buffalo exhibition, awards for breeders and a market for buffalo-milk products were planned. The announced event thus brought together buffalo farming, breeders and buffalo-milk products in a local setting.
The DJ171 county road crosses the commune of Suciu de Sus. It runs from Târgu Lăpuș to the commune of Târlișua in Bistrița-Năsăud County.
