The Cavnic ski area comprises seven slopes with a total length of 8.5 kilometres; they are suitable for beginners, intermediate skiers and professionals.

SuperSki Cavnic offers a ski and snowboarding school with a covered conveyor belt for beginners as well as a separate beginners’ area.

The “Roata” slopes at SuperSki Cavnic are 6 kilometres long in total and include an area for beginners, an intermediate area and a slope for advanced skiers. There is also a toboggan park with two runs totalling 600 metres.

The “Icoana” ski area is geared towards families and beginners as well as alpine skiing, toboggan runs and alternative leisure activities.

Landscape in the Gutâi Mountains

Cavnic lies at the foot of the Gutâi Mountains, in the upper reaches of the Cavnic River, at an altitude of 550 to 1,120 metres.

The forests of Cavnic transition from beech-dominated lower and middle elevations to mixed and coniferous forests at higher elevations.

The Cavnic River crosses the town from east to west.

Culture and History

The Born and Papp Museum houses documents, photographs, minerals and writings from the collections of Ignar Edler von Born and Simon Papp.

The “Sf. Varvara” wooden church in Cavnic is a registered monument and dates from 1812.

The “Stâlpul Tătar” monument in Cavnic commemorates the victory over the Tatars in 1717.

The ruins of the Logolda gold-processing smelter in Cavnic are registered as a monument and date from the 18th century.

The non-ferrous metal flotation plant in Cavnic is registered as a monument and dates from 1810–1820.

Winter Customs and Events

“Cântarea versului lu’ Constantin” is a form of folk theatre featuring an annual performance during the winter holidays in Cavnic, a tradition passed down for more than a century.

Brondoșii is a winter custom from Cavnic in which masked men walk through the streets during the Christmas season and create loud noise for ritual purposes; they wear white traditional costumes, opanki, sheepskin masks and bells attached to harnesses.

More than 60 people took part in that edition of the steering-wheel competition in Cavnic; it was the 11th edition.

Hiking and Circular Routes

The hike to Piatra Mălnașului begins in Cavnic-Handal and is classified as easy.

Piatra Mălnașului can be climbed carefully without alpine techniques and without alpine protection.

The circular route from Cavnic via Pășunea Gaidoș, Grădina Regelui, Stanul Herștiol and Stâlpul Tătarilor can be reached by buses operating on the Baia Mare–Cavnic route, by mountain bike or by car.
