Holiday apartment in Remeți: Churches, Nature and Muntele Bradului

Remeți combines Ukrainian churches, protected natural areas and a tourist circular trail in the mountains. The commune lies in the northern Maramureș Basin on the right bank of the Tisa.

Holiday apartment in Remeți among churches and traditions

The Ukrainian Church of the former Pauline monastery dates from the 15th century. It stands on Dubrora Hill in the northeast of the village of Remeți, about 200 metres from the national road. The old church contains an old iconostasis whose painter is unknown, and it is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Lord. According to local tradition, hermit monks built the stone church before Remeți existed as a village. In Remeți, visitors interested in culture can therefore focus on architectural history, furnishings, patron saint dedication and a local tradition.

The current ecclesiastical landscape also includes Remeți’s new Ukrainian Orthodox parish church. It was built between 1984 and 1986 and is dedicated to All Saints. A group of painters from the Ukrainian region of Transcarpathia decorated the new church between 2001 and 2002 with fat-tempera paintings. The construction period and the later decoration are clearly separated in time. The paintings add a later artistic execution from Transcarpathia to the ecclesiastical design in Remeți. For the Ukrainian community in Remeți, the church combines worship in the mother tongue with inherited traditions and customs. The ecclesiastical tradition is thus also present in the newer parish church with its Ukrainian character.

Natural area along the Tisa

The commune of Remeți lies within the Natura 2000 site Tisa Superioară (ROSCI0251) and the Natura 2000 site Pricop-Huta-Certeze (ROSCI0358). It also belongs to the Tisa Superioară Special Protection Area for birds (ROSPA0143). In Remeți, the name Tisa Superioară therefore refers both to a Natura 2000 site and to the Special Protection Area for birds, while Pricop-Huta-Certeze is the second Natura 2000 site within the commune.

Circular trail on Muntele Bradului

For active days, there is the Muntele Bradului trail: it is a tourist circular route located in Remeți, in the northwest of the Munții Igniș, and is accessible from Pasul Huta or from Remeți. Muntele Bradului has an elevation of 1,079 metres. The elevation of 1,079 metres adds a specific topographical reference to the circular trail in the mountainous area of the commune of Remeți. For planning a day trip, the circular trail can be approached either via Pasul Huta or from Remeți; both access points lead to the same trail. Anyone who decides on the approach in advance can assign the tour’s starting point to one of the two access routes. As a circular trail, the route returns to its starting point, so no separate endpoint needs to be planned.

Location and transport route

The international DN 19 road, which forms the commune’s main transport route, is also part of the area’s character. Together with the right bank of the Tisa, it describes Remeți’s geographical setting between the river area and the transport route.
