Discover Ieud: Wooden Churches, Museum and Jewish Cemetery

In Ieud, the Biserica din Deal stands on a rocky slope by the Ieudișor stream in the village cemetery.

Culture

The Biserica Ieud-Deal complex includes an access staircase to the tower made from a single piece of wood. The complex also includes a Way of the Cross with 14 small brick-built stations. Dendrochronological studies date the construction of the Biserica de lemn „Naşterea Maicii Domnului” din Ieud Deal to the first decade of the 17th century. The dating covers the period from 1611 to 1621.

The Biserica din Șes houses a valuable collection of reverse-glass icons from Nicula and other centres of icon painting in Transylvania.

The Mănăstirea Ieud is the second wooden church in Ieud. It is also known as the Church in the Plain and the Valley Church. It was built in 1717 after the last Tatar invasion. Due to its spiritual, architectural and cultural values, it is designated as a historic monument.

The Muzeul Satului din Ieud is housed in a former peasant farmstead dating from 1890. Its holdings include traditional garments, while the collection also contains tools typical of this area. Access to the museum is through a monumental oak gate whose roof is made of fir shingles. The gate is decorated with carved rope and geometric motifs.

Among the most common ornamental motifs on the gravestones in the Jewish cemetery are the lion, the bird, the griffin and the menorah. The Tree of Life, the blessing hands and the Torah are also part of this group of motifs. The gravestones are remarkable for their shape and size, as well as for the interplay between inscription and ornamentation.

The cultural event is called „Întâlnirea cu Fiii satului“. In the Comuna Ieud, it takes place annually on the first Sunday after 15 August. The date of the event is therefore tied to the calendar rule of the first Sunday after 15 August, rather than to an unchanged day of the month each year.

The traditional workshop is located on the outskirts of the village, in front of the new wooden church, on a narrow road on the other side of the water.

History

The „Manuscrisul de la Ieud“ was discovered in 1921 in the attic of the old church. The „Codicele de la Ieud“ is considered the oldest Romanian religious book. It is dated to the year 1391. Ieud was home to the first Romanian school in Maramureș.
