Borşa: Cascada Cailor, Mountain Trails and Mountain Nature

Borşa combines Cascada Cailor with the mountain ranges of the Munții Rodnei and a diverse mountain landscape. Cascada Cailor lies on the northern slope of the Munții Rodnei, at an altitude of 1,300 m and with a total length of 90 m. It belongs to the Piatra Rea scientific nature reserve, which in turn is part of Parcul Național Munții Rodnei. Piatra Rea is known for the numerous Edelweiss specimens found there. The waterfall, altitude and protected area give this part of Borşa a clearly recognisable landscape character.

Nature

All seasons are recommended as times to visit Cascada Cailor. During the snowmelt, the greatest volume of water is reached around April and May. Over the course of the year, the waterfall's flow therefore changes, while its location on the northern slope and its setting within the Munții Rodnei remain unchanged. The Piatra Rea nature reserve complements the waterfall with a protected landscape in which numerous Edelweiss specimens occur and for which the area is known.

Hiking

An educational trail begins in Stațiunea Borșa at an altitude of 800 m and ends above Lacul Izvorul Bistriței, also called Lacul Știol, in a dwarf pine thicket at an altitude of 1,800 m. The route connects the starting point in the resort with a higher area by the lake and passes through different altitudinal zones.

The marked tourist mountain trail Complex Turistic Borșa – Cascada Cailor – Șaua Știol – Pasul Prislop passes through several named stations in the mountain landscape. Another route runs from Cascada Cailor via Podu Cailor and the valea Cimpoiasa valley to Borșa Fântâna. This route is located in Borșa, Maramureş, in Parcul Național Munții Rodnei. The chairlift from Complexul Turistic Borșa is also available as the easiest access to Cascada Cailor. In this way, the educational trail, marked mountain trail, valley route and lift connect different landscape points around the waterfall.

Winter Sports

The Telegondola and Pârtia Olimpică operate daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitor passes allow access by the facility exclusively to visit the upper area; the ascent takes place without ski or snowboard equipment. In addition to this ascent, Pârtia Vârful Știol is part of Borşa's winter sports offering. It has a medium difficulty level and is served by a drag lift.

Horses and Culture

Cai Borșa Maramureș offers horseback rides and carriage rides. At Cai Borșa Maramureș, children can learn to ride and care for horses. The horse-related activities form a separate area of experiences alongside the waterfall, mountain trails and winter sports.

In the Gara district, on Strada Eroilor near the former military hospital, stands the Monumentul Eroilor. The Monumentul Eroilor in Borșa is an ensemble of three obelisks.
