Discover Seini: Fortress, Churches and Landscape

Seini lies on the eastern edge of the Someș Plain. There, the plain meets the western foothills of the Gutâi Mountains. A living monument is located on Dealul Comja. Around 10,000 fir trees form the name „Eminescu“. The monument was created in 1939.

Culture and History

The medieval fortress of Seini is located on Dealul Cetății in the northeast of the town. Its ruins are surrounded by ditches and include a wooden observation tower as well as tables and benches. An obelisk commemorating Erdusy Syilvester Janos stands in Seini in front of the Reformed Church. The fortress ruins, obelisk and churches are located throughout the town as different testimonies to its history.

The Roman Catholic Church is considered the oldest church in the town. It dates from 1421. The Reformed Church in Seini, a Calvinist church, dates from 1796. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1904. These three religious buildings represent different historical influences, while their construction dates make several centuries of the town's history visible.

Casa Bay was built towards the end of the 19th century. The building is a historical monument. The wooden church in Seini was built by craftsmen from the historic region of Maramureș. There is also the Church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril, which was built between 1879 and 1882 by Reverend Alexiu Berinde. At the beginning of the 1940s, his son modernised the church. It contains the only stone iconostasis in a Romanian church.

The historic buildings thus span different eras and include not only churches but also a fortress, an obelisk and a building protected as a monument. Together with the wooden church and the stone iconostasis, different forms of sacred and secular architecture meet in Seini.

Cycle Paths and Routes

The CFR Main Line 400 crosses Seini. It runs along the Brașov–Deda–Dej–Baia Mare–Satu Mare route. Seini has around 6 km of urban cycle paths and a bike-sharing system with four fixed rental stations.

The Drumul Maramureșului includes the Seini–Țara Codrului route, which is 170 km long and takes nine days. There is no tourist signposting for access to Dealul Comja from Racșa. From Seini, there are marked routes in the Seinel Valley and via Dealul Cetății Seini.

Events

Zilele oraşului Seini is a traditional town festival lasting two days. The various cultural events include the celebration of the „Nunților de Aur“, folklore performances, sports competitions and open-air concerts. The festival thus combines several types of events within a two-day programme.

An international off-road competition takes place at the beginning of May. The competition lasts two days. It takes place in the area of the Carierei Seini and on wooded hills.
