Vața de Jos – Thermal Baths, Wooden Churches and History

The Complex Balneo Termal Vața Băi is located in the Zarand Depression on the Crișul Alb River. The thermal waters of Vața Băi are rich in calcium, sulphur, sodium and magnesium.

Thermal Baths

The Vața Thermal Spa includes indoor pools with thermal water. There are also saunas and a salt cave. Relaxation treatments are offered at the Health Centre of the Vața Thermal Baths. Medical physiotherapy and kinesiotherapy are also offered there. The thermal baths at the Health Centre are available both as immersion baths and pool baths.

The Ștrand Vața Băi includes three additional pools with thermal water. The Ștrand Vața Băi also has a saltwater pool with hydromassage. A pool modelled on a lazy river has been installed at the Ștrand Vața Băi. The Vața Băi Complex includes a dendrological park that is over 100 years old. The restaurants of the Vața Băi Complex serve traditional dishes.

The various bathing areas are referred to as the Vața Thermal Spa, the Health Centre of the Vața Thermal Baths and the Ștrand Vața Băi.

Culture and History

The wooden church of Ciungani is located in the municipality of Vața de Jos. It was built around 1600. Its tower is 14 metres high. Among the wooden churches in Hunedoara County, it is the tallest.

The wooden church of Birtin is also located in the municipality of Vața de Jos. It was built in 1690. It is registered as a historic monument. Vața de Jos has been documented historically since 1439. Its historical name is Wattya.

The Zestrea Apusenilor collection enables the public to interact with objects and materials from the collection and learn more about local history, culture, art and traditions.

Archaeology

Peștera Prihodiște, also known as Peștera Hânzasca, is located in the vicinity of Vața de Jos. Peștera Prihodiște is an archaeological site of the cave settlement type. Cave settlements from the Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age and Eneolithic period are recorded for Peștera Prihodiște.

The cave has two entrances. They join in a central chamber to form a partially active gallery.

Getting Around

At the beginning of the 20th century, King Carol al II-lea travelled from Săvârșin Castle to the thermal baths of Vața. The road used for this purpose is now called “Drumul Regelui”.

Route 30MN17 uses exclusively the road DJ707, known as “Drumul Regelui”, between Petriș and Vața de Jos. It passes through Petriș, Corbești, Roșia Nouă and Obârșia. The route description therefore includes both the current name “Drumul Regelui” and the road designation DJ707.
