Uricani: Mountain Trails, Cultural Routes and Nature

Uricani offers hikes on tourist mountain trails and established thematic trails with varying levels of difficulty.

Culture and Active Trails

Uricani is the starting point of the local cultural tourism route “Ținutul Momârlanilor”.

Uricani also serves as the starting point for the regional cultural tourism route “Drumul haiducului Neag”.

Another cultural tourism route starts in Uricani: “Ruta culturală a bisericilor de lemn din Depresiunea Petroșani – Valea Jiului”, which is integrated into the cross-border “Ruta Cultural Turistică a Bisericilor de lemn din România și Moldova”.

Active tourism in Uricani includes trail running, ski touring, mountaineering, climbing and mountain biking.

Ecotourism activities in Uricani include observing flora and fauna, collecting medicinal plants, and bird and wildlife watching.

Natural Environment

The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0217 Retezat lies within the administrative territory of Uricani.

Karst and formations developed in limestone cover approximately 18% of the area of Uricani and extend for 41 km from the area of the Jiului de Vest to Cernișoara.

The main caves in the upper reaches of the Jiului de Vest in the Uricani area are undeveloped and feature great lengths, elevation differences and varying levels of difficulty. They can only be visited with speleological equipment and a guide.

Waterfalls and Thematic Trails

The thematic trail to Cascada Sterminos starts at the access point on Strada Narciselor and follows a forest road through the Sterminos Valley, running parallel to the Sterminos stream.

The trail starts at the DN 66A, is marked with a yellow flower symbol and has a 1000 mm × 800 mm information panel at the starting point.

Cascada Firizoni is reached by entering and crossing the Cheile Firizoni.

Cascada Firizoni is a 12 m-high waterfall at the end of the Cheile Firizoni.

Trails through Valleys and Cultural Landscapes

Access to Scocul Urzicarului is via the DN 66A from Uricani towards Câmpușel, through Valea de Brazi and Câmpu lui Neag; Câmpul Mielului is the starting point of the trail.

The thematic trail to Scocul Urzicarului follows the dry valley of the Urzicarului stream, crosses the dry gorges formed by it and then leads to Scocul Urzicarului.

On the Liliacului Trail, visitors can observe the traditions of pastoralism, sheep farming and beekeeping in Dodoconi and Valea de Brazi.

The tourist cycle route “Uricani – Câmpu lui Neag – Câmpul Mielului – Câmpușel” connects these four places.

The roads to several of Uricani’s natural attractions have less traffic and are therefore better suited to cycling.

Long Mountain Hike

The CG Trail connects Uricani with Vârful Peleaga.

The difficult hike takes approximately 11–14 hours, involves more than 3000 metres of ascent and is intended for experienced, well-equipped hikers. It is dangerous in winter; whether it can be traversed depends on the amount and condition of the snow.

The CG Trail begins west of Uricani near the DN 66A, approximately 300 m downstream from a spring with a constructed surround, towards Petroșani, near the bridge over the Pârâul Sterminos.
