Discover Kalan: Roman Era, Churches and Thermal Baths
Culture
Aquae is located in Călan as an archaeological site from the Roman era. The Roman basin of Aquae was carved into the rock and measures 7 × 14 metres. Its depth is approximately 3.60–4 metres.
The thermal baths of Aquae use thermomineral water from spring 4371 H. The baths comprise five pools, one of which is covered. The water temperature is 27–29 °C.
Aquae therefore features two water-related remains with clearly defined characteristics: the Roman basin carved into the rock and the five thermal pools, one of them covered. These details link the archaeological site with the specified structural and water-related features.
The Church of Saint George stands in Streisîngiorgiu. It is a Romanesque stone church dating from the fourth decade of the 12th century. It was preceded by a wooden structure from the 11th to the 12th century.
The oldest surviving layer of wall paintings is located in the church of Streisîngiorgiu. It dates from 1313–1314 and is attributed to Teofil Zugravul. The Church of Saint George in Streisîngiorgiu lies on the European Cultural Route for Romanesque Architectural Heritage.
The Orthodox Church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” stands in Strei. It is a stone courtyard church built in the 13th century. Fragments of the exterior paintings from the 14th century are still faintly visible on the church in Strei. The fragments are located on the eastern apse and the southern façade.
The churches in Streisîngiorgiu and Strei document specific structural elements and areas of painted decoration: a wooden structure, a Romanesque stone church, the eastern apse and the southern façade. They are complemented by the dated layer of wall paintings in Streisîngiorgiu and the faintly visible fragments of exterior paintings in Strei.
The ancient quarry of Măgura Călanului supplied limestone blocks for the Dacian fortresses in the Orăştie Mountains. As an archaeological quarry, Măgura Călanului is located in the Strei Valley. It is a few kilometres from Călan and largely hidden by forest.
The remains in Streisîngiorgiu and Strei thus preserve different construction and painting phases: in Streisîngiorgiu, the documented history extends from the preceding wooden structure through the Romanesque stone church to the layer of wall paintings from 1313–1314. In Strei, fragments of exterior paintings survive in two clearly identified areas of the church building.
