Sfântul Dumitru Church: a building in the village

The “Sfântul Dumitru” Church was built in the 18th century. It is one of the national historic monuments and one of the most important tourist destinations in the Hărău commune. As a building in the village, it belongs to a different historical period from the settlement at the Hărău–Pe Șag site, which dates from the developed Neolithic period (Vinča/A-B).

Archaeology between the settlement and the Mureș

The Hărău–Cetate archaeological site is a settlement at the place called La Cetate (Földvár). Material found at this settlement is kept in the museum in Deva. Thus, in terms of the archaeological connection with the locality, the settlement site and the museum in Deva represent different parts of the same heritage.

Another archaeological site is Hărău–Pe Șag. It lies on a well-developed terrace on the present-day floodplain of the Mureș between Hărău and Chimindia. The settlement there dates from the developed Neolithic period (Vinča/A-B). It included a hut and a ditch regarded as part of a defence system for the Neolithic settlement. The complexes at the site that were partially or completely excavated also included an inhumation grave. The location on the river plain and the archaeological finds give this site two clearly distinguishable points of reference.

Hills, mountains and a castle in the surrounding region

Dealul Archiei and Dealul Uroiului are hills in the vicinity of Hărău. Dealul Cutinului and Măgura Sârbii are mountains in the wider region around Hărău. Hunyad Castle, a castle, is also located in the wider surrounding region. The landscape therefore extends from the hills in the immediate vicinity to mountains and a castle in the wider region.

Leisure route on the Mureș

The Vaporașul Stelar leisure route on the Mureș runs Șoimuș–Mintia–Hărău–Șoimuș. Hărău remains one stop along this loop; the route ends after returning to Șoimuș, not directly in Hărău. A leisure boat trip on the Vaporașul Stelar along this route takes approximately one hour. The approximate duration provides a separate, manageable timeframe for planning the day alongside Hărău’s cultural and historical themes. On 19 March 2026, the season for leisure trips by excursion boats on the Mureș resumed in Șoimuș after the winter break.
