Râu Bărbat – Archaeology and Hiking Trails
Râu Bărbat combines an archaeological site with trails through the valley of the Râul Bărbat and mountain destinations in the surrounding area. The Râu Bărbat–Cetate site includes a Roman marching camp measuring 120 × 80 m. In places, parts of the camp have been preserved up to 2 m high.
Culture and History
The Roman fort of Râu Bărbat is an archaeological site in the territory of the commune of Pui, near the village of Râu Bărbat in Hunedoara County. It documents the Roman presence in the province of Dacia and, at the same time, the military organization of the Roman Empire in this province. Thus, the visible remains of the marching camp and the historical context of the fort stand side by side at the same location.
Dacia is an ancient site in the wider regional surroundings of Râu Bărbat. The monument Crucea Eroilor de pe Muntele Straja is also located in this wider regional area. Both destinations complement the archaeological site with further historical points of reference in the region, without being part of the fort of Râu Bărbat.
Trails through the Valley
The Pui–Hobiţa–Tăul Ţapului–Porţile Închise hiking trail leads from Pui through Râu Bărbat and Hobiţa. The route follows a forest road along the valley of the Râul Bărbat and extends to the vicinity of Stâna de Râu. This connects Pui, Râu Bărbat, Hobiţa, and the section of the valley up to Stâna de Râu in a single named route.
From Hobiţa, Stâna de Râu can be reached via the unpaved county road DJ 667. The county road runs through the valley of the Râul Bărbat. Route 14 then connects Stâna de Râu, Tăul Țapului, Porțile Închise, Vf. Păpușa, Vf. Păpușa Mică, and Șaua Custurii. It then leads back to Stâna de Râu.
Lake and Peaks
Tăul Ţapului is a glacial lake with an island. The lake lies along the sequence of the named route destinations between Stâna de Râu and Porţile Închise. It therefore appears together with several named mountain points in the description of the route, while remaining an independent landscape feature as a glacial lake with an island.
The mountain Piatra Barului, the Brădețului peak, the Piatra Meteștilor peak, and the Capu Găieriului peak are located in the surroundings of Râu Bărbat. These four names refer to different landscape points around the locality: Piatra Barului is named as a mountain, while Brădețului, Piatra Meteștilor, and Capu Găieriului are peaks.
Dacia and Crucea Eroilor de pe Muntele Straja refer to additional historical destinations in the wider regional surroundings of Râu Bărbat.
