Făgeţel: Monastery, Trotuș sources, and alpine views

Mănăstirea Făgețel became a monastery in 1995 and received the second dedication, “Tăierea Capului Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul” (Beheading of Saint John the Baptist). The Trotuș River also flows through Făgețel, so sacred history and a river course meet at the same destination.

During a pilgrimage, Mănăstirea Făgețel was the final stop. A candle was lit at the grave of Dionisie Șova. The commemoration is thus directly connected with the monastery and the conclusion of this pilgrimage.

Geographical location

Mănăstirea Făgețel is located on the DN 12A national road on the western side of Făgețel. The road connects Transylvania and Moldavia via the Ghimeș-Palanca Pass.

Water and route

After turning onto the road to the village of Făgețel, the Făgețel–Frumoasa route reaches the first artificial lake on the Trotuș after approximately one hour and ten minutes. On the opposite bank, an old border path runs below the edge of the forest and rises gently. At this section, the water surface, forest edge, and path form a sequence in which the lake and the historic path lie on opposite banks.

After leaving the forest, the route reaches an open alpine area and leads to one of the Trotuș sources. The Trotuș forms from several streams that flow through the valleys in its source area.

For hikes on a route with forest, meadow, and spring sections, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions before setting out. An approximate time estimate should be taken into account in personal planning with an appropriate margin. Before departure, current information about the route and conditions can also be checked. This is particularly useful for trail sections that, after a turnoff, pass through different landscape forms. Current traffic information is also part of the preparations for driving on a national road. At viewpoints along a route, it may be helpful to consider the planned duration and the sequence of sections in advance.

Mountain landscape and views

From a mountain ridge with several small paths and an extensive alpine meadow, there is a view of Ceahlău. The open meadow stands alongside the narrower paths of the ridge and forms a distinct section of the landscape. Before reaching the source, the Făgețel–Frumoasa route offers views westward toward the Munții Harghitei.

Near the source of the Trotuș, the Făgețel–Frumoasa route also offers views of Vârful Păgânului and the Munții Hășmașului. The viewing directions therefore change along the route: from the mountain ridge, the view extends toward Ceahlău; before the source, westward toward the Munții Harghitei; and in the source area, toward Vârful Păgânului and the Munții Hășmașului.
