Archaeology and landscape
The Șoimeni archaeological site lies at the foot of the Ciuc Mountains in the municipality of Păuleni-Ciuc and occupies the natural promontory known as Várdomb (Dâmbul Cetății). Várdomb (Dâmbul Cetății) is situated at an altitude of 882 metres on a connecting saddle between a mountain spur and a hill.
The Dâmbul Cetății archaeological site is considered the most significant site with remains of the Costișa culture in Transylvania. Many of the movable archaeological finds discovered during the archaeological investigations at Dâmbul Cetății were classified as “treasures”. Most of the finds discovered at Dâmbul Cetății are exhibited in the permanent exhibition “Așezarea preistorică de la Păuleni-Ciuc” at the headquarters of the National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians in Sfântu Gheorghe. The National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians also presents an archaeological exhibition entitled “Așezarea preistorică Păuleni-Ciuc Dâmbul Cetății”.
Churches and history
The Roman Catholic church in Păuleni-Ciuc was built in 1943 and consecrated in 1949.
In the district of Delniţa, next to the village church at Tordavölgye, there is a medieval archaeological site. It includes a necropolis dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The archaeological site in Delnița also includes a medieval settlement; the dating is given as the 14th to 15th centuries and the 17th century.
The present-day freestanding church of St John the Baptist in Delnița was built between the middle and the end of the 15th century. The parish of this church is first documented in the papal tithe register of 1332–1333.
Routes and landscape
The second day of the Via Mariae leads from Lunca de Sus via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc and covers 26.8 kilometres and 9 hours 45 minutes. Another description of the Via Mariae leads from Ghimeș Făget via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc; this route is specified as taking two days and covering 47.5 kilometres.
The paved farm road Vásárút near St John the Baptist Church is popular with cyclists from the surrounding area.
Crafts and everyday life
The patterned wool carpets of the Ciuc region, influenced by Turkish designs, are still made in Păuleni-Ciuc. In the past, women from Păuleni-Ciuc wove garments for the Franciscan friars of Csíksomlyó.
Local hosts offer carriage rides. There are also demonstrations of chimney cake baking and traditional carpet weaving.
