Agigea: Sea Dunes and Bird Migration

The Dunele marine de la Agigea are a botanical nature reserve. The area covers 25 hectares. It is of national interest and corresponds to IUCN Category IV. It is the only nature reserve with sea dunes in Romania.

Nature

The Staţiunea Biologică Marină „Prof. Dr. Ioan Borcea“ offers the public a themed trail. The trail is located in the Dunele marine de la Agigea nature reserve. It leads through the plant communities in the nature reserve and also through the animal communities. QR codes are available along the themed trail. These QR codes can be used to download explanations of the construction of the environmentally friendly structures.

In this way, the trail combines the botanical and zoological features of the protected area with information about the structures accompanying the themed tour. The plant and animal communities are considered within the same nature reserve, while the QR codes provide additional explanations about the construction of the environmentally friendly elements.

Bird Migration

The Agigea Ornithological Observatory is Romania's first permanently operated station for researching bird migration. The Agigea Migration Station prepares interested individuals for activities related to bird ringing.

Accordingly, the observatory's focus encompasses both the permanent study of bird migration and preparation for activities related to bird ringing. Alongside the themed trail, the station thus serves as an independent nature-related point of interest in Agigea.

History

Ioan Borcea“ was founded in 1926. The founder was the zoologist Prof. Ioan Borcea.

The foundation in 1926 is part of the history of the biological station and is directly linked to the zoologist Prof. Ioan Borcea. His name is also included in the name of the Staţiunea Biologică Marină.

Protected Areas

Lacul Agigea is a zoological protected area. It covers 35 hectares. Recent observations at Lacul Agigea showed mainly migratory bird species. These bird species were of ornithological interest. In 1967, researchers from the “I. Borcea” Marine Research Station in Agigea described bird populations of 5,000 to 10,000 specimens at Lacul Agigea, belonging to species of high conservation value.

Lacul Agigea complements the dune area with another protected area focused on zoology. The recent observations relate mainly to migratory bird species, while the historical description from 1967 gives specific populations of 5,000 to 10,000 specimens.
