Câineni-Băi: Salt Lake, Steppe and Spa Town History
Spa Town History and Mud
Lacul Sărat Câineni is closely connected with the history of Câineni-Băi through its sapropelic mud. The mud has a high hydrogen sulfide content and was used in the past to treat rheumatic diseases. Câineni-Băi is one of the therapeutic salt lakes in Brăila County with sapropelic mud. On the lakeshore, the settlement was a seasonal spa of local interest with a balneoclimatic focus. The former Câineni Băi spa offered warm and cold mud baths. Thus, a specific natural phenomenon and the historical use as a spa town come directly together at the lake. At a historic spa offering warm and cold mud baths, travelers should check the currently applicable opening hours in advance.
Lake and Steppe
Lacul Sărat Câineni was formed through fluvial processes. At the confluence of the Buzău River and its tributaries, alluvium was deposited, from which the lake formed. The river landscape is therefore not only the lake’s geographical setting but also the context of its formation. Lacul Câineni has an elongated shape, covers an average of 96 hectares and includes an area of almost 2 hectares covered by reeds. The lake lies on the left bank of the Buzău River; its location is therefore shaped both by the body of water itself and by the river landscape. For trips to a lake, it is advisable to check route conditions and transport times up to date before departure.
The area of Câineni Băi lies in the open steppe. The open steppe is characterized by elevated temperatures, low humidity and calm atmospheric conditions. The halophytes brânca (Salicornia herbacea) and ghirinul (Suaeda maritima) are common around Lacul Câineni Băi. The lake, reeds, open steppe and salt-tolerant plants are therefore closely connected within the landscape, without the individual habitats losing their distinct character.
