Nature and River Landscape

Balta Mică a Brăilei is recognised for its ornithological importance. It lies along one of the most important bird migration corridors in the Lower Danube Basin.

Brăila’s location in the Lower Danube Basin combines significant birdlife with the Danube’s open riverside areas. This creates a juxtaposition of different landscapes: the bird migration corridor at Balta Mică a Brăilei and the landscaped areas along the river.

Faleza and Esplanada Dunării cover 7.1 hectares. Both areas offer contact with the river landscape.

Parcul Monument in Brăila is a 53-hectare recreational area with purpose-built sports facilities. The Muzeul de Științe ale Naturii can also be visited there.

Parcul Monument and Grădina Publică are also two large-scale areas that form part of the cityscape. Their differing features range from purpose-built sports facilities and the natural history museum to historical traces and underground tunnels.

Grădina Publică in Brăila covers 7.5 hectares and contains the ruins of the former fortress of Brăila. It also contains an entrance to the city’s underground tunnels. These tunnels are known as the “hrubele Brăilei”.

Culture and History

The Centrul Cultural „Nicăpetre“ was founded in 2001. Its purpose was to present the work of the sculptor Nicăpetre donated to the Muzeul Brăilei „Carol I“.

The cultural centre thus connects its founding history with the work of a single sculptor and with the „Carol I“ Museum. The collection is the focus of the building, while other historic sites in Brăila make entire ensembles and urban areas visible.

Casa Memorială „Panait Istrati“ is listed as a memorial building in the National List of Monuments, Ensembles and Historic Sites. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the Neo-Romanian style.

Since 1984, Casa Memorială „Panait Istrati“ has housed the „Panait Istrati“ memorial exhibition.

The memorial exhibition includes manuscripts, personal belongings and furniture. The collection also includes signed books, rare editions, first editions and documentary photographs.

The Teatrul „Maria Filotti“ in Brăila was built around 1850. As an architectural monument, it forms part of the national cultural heritage.

The historic centre of Brăila is classified as a Category A monument of national historic value.

The ensemble of Strada Mihai Eminescu in Brăila dates from the 19th century.

The ensemble of Piața Traian in Brăila dates from the early 18th century.

The historic centre thus brings together a monument of national historic value and ensembles from different centuries. Strada Mihai Eminescu points to the 19th century, while Piața Traian dates back to the beginning of the 18th century.

Travel and Visiting

Road connections lead from Brăila to Constanța and Tulcea. They may run via the ferry connection at Smârdan and subsequent national roads.

These connections also place Brăila on routes towards Constanța and Tulcea. For the journey, the ferry connection at Smârdan can be combined with subsequent national roads.

At the Centrul Cultural „Nicăpetre“, visiting hours from October to April are Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. From May to September, they are 10:00 to 18:00 on these days.

The cultural centre is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, except during cultural events.

Opening hours therefore vary by season: from October to April, visits begin at 09:00 from Wednesday to Sunday, and from May to September at 10:00. The centre remains closed on Mondays and Tuesdays unless a cultural event is taking place.
