Tescani – Church, Galleries and Artist Residencies
Culture and History
The “Sf. Gheorghe” Church in Tescani dates from 1769 and was restored in 1986. Another historic site is the former manor house of the Rosetti-Tescanu family. The building has the status of a historic monument and houses the “Dumitru şi Alice Rosetti Tescanu – George Enescu” section. The church and former manor house combine sacred architecture with a former family estate. The year of the restoration is just as much a part of the church’s history as its origins in the 18th century.
The section is closed on Mondays. From Tuesday to Sunday, it can be visited between 10:00 and 17:00; the last admission is at 16:30. For a museum visit, the current opening hours should be checked before travelling. Visitors to the section in the afternoon must take note of the last admission time, as access closes half an hour before the end of opening hours.
Galleries and Studios
The “Ilie Boca” Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Merăria building. Merăria is part of the Rosetti-Tescanu ensemble and houses other art galleries and studios in addition to the gallery. This means that exhibition spaces and artists’ workplaces are located under one shared roof. For culture enthusiasts, a museum visit connects several stops: the church, former manor house, gallery and studios. Opening hours are just as important for planning the day as announced event dates. For exhibitions and creative workshops, it is advisable to check current durations or event days before travelling. The same applies to time-limited programmes and changing presentations when planning your own schedule.
The “Ilie Boca” Gallery traditionally presents temporary exhibitions by artists invited to the studios in Tescani. The changing exhibitions are therefore connected with the artistic work represented by the studios in Merăria. Their limited duration makes each exhibition a separate phase in the gallery’s programme.
Artistic Programmes
Art camps for visual art have been held in Tescani since 1976. Since 2008, the artist residency programme has been organised and financially supported by the Muzeul Național “George Enescu”. It includes creative workshops for music, literature and visual art. Thus, the artistic spectrum extends beyond visual art and encompasses several forms of expression.
The “Rezidența Coregrafică TERPSICHORE” is designed as an intensive masterclass in choreography. The concept includes study, training and artistic development under the guidance of established artists and educators. The “Rezidența Coregrafică TERPSICHORE 2026” was the 15th edition of the event. For time-specific programmes, current event dates should be checked before travelling.
Park and Landscape
The Tescani museum grounds are located in a dendrological park in a hilly landscape. The park provides the landscape setting for the museum grounds, while the church, manor house, galleries and studios define the cultural sites.
