Moledo between the Serra, history and hiking trails

Moledo lies in a valley between the Serra de São Lourenço and the Serra de São Salvador. The landscape therefore combines clear geographical orientation with a history dating back to the Iron Age and Roman times. When planning a trip, visitors can combine nature, traces of history, local festivals and different walking experiences in Moledo.

Historical traces around Moledo

A prominent starting point for exploring the local history is the Igreja Paroquial de Moledo. It was completely built during the transition from the 18th to the 19th century. The PR9, the Trilho da Azenha, starts directly next to the church. This makes it possible to mentally combine cultural orientation with a signposted trail when planning a trip, without drawing any conclusions about a specific length of stay.

An older past is at the heart of the fortified settlement of São Lourenço. It was built during the Iron Age and continued to exist in Roman times. Other historical traces include the Castros de Maga. The inscription at Penedo de Lamas also offers a concrete insight into the past. It consists of 11 lines and contains letter combinations known as nexuses, which are typical of Roman inscriptions. A. Tovar and M. Lourdes Albertos regarded the inscription as a votive offering dedicated to several local gods. This aspect is therefore particularly relevant to visitors interested in ancient written records and regional cultural history.

Trails, elevations and landscape

The PR9, the Trilho da Azenha, is not the only described trail in the surrounding area. The GR52, the Grande Rota da Transumância, begins near the settlement of Casais do Monte in the Freguesia de Moledo. It climbs to the summit of the Serra de São Lourenço and offers views in all directions. For day planning, this means clearly distinguishing between a trail with a historical connection to the Azenha and a route leading up to a mountain summit.

Another landscape destination is the Cascata do Inferno, located in the place of Inferno. The Azenha de Moledo is now in ruins. It belonged to the Marques family, who lived in the settlement of Moledo, and olive oil was produced there. Together with the name of the PR9, this creates a regional thematic link between trail, mill and former agricultural use. Nevertheless, you should include the individual places as separate destinations in your planning.

Festivals and orientation for your stay

The local calendar includes several festivals in different settlements. The S. Lourenço festival is celebrated in Casais do Monte on the second Sunday in August. The Sra. Conceição festival takes place in Coura on 8 December. In Moita, the S. Francisco festival is celebrated on the second Sunday in August, while the Senhor dos Enfermos festival is held in Lamas on the first Sunday in August.
