Discover São João Da Pesqueira
São João Da Pesqueira combines the banks of the Douro with an extensive wine landscape, historical traces and a variety of opportunities for active or culturally oriented holidays. If you are looking for a holiday apartment as a base for different interests, you will find inspiration here among winegrowing, river landscapes, local history and regional cuisine.
Wine landscape and the Douro as defining themes
The landscape of the Douro near São João da Pesqueira is characterised by extensive vineyards. The wine-growing region forms part of the wider Alto Douro wine landscape, which has been shaped by around 2,000 years of winemaking tradition. Those interested in the connection between landscape and wine can visit the Museu do Vinho de São João da Pesqueira. It documents and preserves the municipality’s winegrowing heritage. The exhibition is divided into three sections and explores the winegrowing territory of São João da Pesqueira, its landscape and its wines.
Individual events also offer insight into this regional character. One edition of Vindouro – Festa Pombalina held in São João da Pesqueira in September included presentations by producers from the Douro and tastings. Another edition held in September included a dinner, entertainment, a Pombaline market and concerts. The two event examples have different focuses and can serve as cultural inspiration when planning a trip.
Trails, viewpoints and river experiences
The municipality of São João da Pesqueira has four short hiking trails and a section of a long-distance route. The PR1 – Rota dos Castanheiros is 13.8 kilometres long. The GR14 – Rota dos Vinhos da Europa runs through São João da Pesqueira along a 45.4-kilometre route. This allows for different priorities when planning an excursion: shorter trails are available alongside a considerably longer long-distance route, while the name of the GR14 already points to the connection between hiking and the wine landscape.
A striking cultural and scenic site is the Santuário de São Salvador do Mundo. It consists of around ten small hermitages distributed across the mountain and culminates at Monte da Fraga, at an altitude of 711 metres. The Santuário offers a panorama over the Cachão da Valeira. You can therefore consider this site as a destination for a day when religious history and appreciation of the landscape come together. In addition, Dourovou offers river ecotourism on the Douro with sailing and motorboats. The Concessão de Pesca Desportiva do Rio Douro is also located in the municipality, on the left bank of the Douro.
Historical sites and regional cuisine
The surrounding area offers further points of interest for cultural and historical discoveries. The historic centre of Trevões preserves a medieval layout. The Dólmen de Areita is considered one of the most significant prehistoric monuments in the region and attests to human settlement in this area. In São João da Pesqueira, Praça da República forms the centre of the town. Cais da Ferradosa lies above the river and is located on the site of a former railway station; its historical context should be retained when considering the site.
The culinary side includes Cabrito assado no forno, which is considered the most emblematic dish of São João da Pesqueira. Together with winemaking, the Douro and the historical sites, this creates a destination where you can choose your accommodation according to your preferred holiday rhythm: cultural sightseeing, trails through the landscape, river experiences or regional cuisine each offer a different focus.
