Sabrosa: Douro Landscape, Wine and Trails

Sabrosa combines the terraced landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro with viewpoints, traces of history and a strong wine tradition. From the Miradouro de Sabrosa, the view extends over the Pinhão Valley and the terraced cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, whose schist walls are a defining feature. The Miradouro da Beijoca opens up views of the Douro, the vineyards and the terraces of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. At the Miradouro de S. Domingos de Provesende, the Douro lies to the south in the panorama. The Miradouro Torguiano de São Cristóvão do Douro provides another distinctive highlight, with panoramic views of the Douro terraces and the confluence of the Pinhão and Douro rivers.

History along trails and in historic buildings

The Castro de Sabrosa, also known as Castelo dos Mouros, is a fortified Iron Age settlement and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1970. The Casa dos Belezas in Provesende, which is also classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, and Sabrosa's manor houses add further historical points of reference. Many of these manor houses in Sabrosa date from the development of the Douro wine region in the 18th century. This creates a varied cultural focus for visitors interested in the connection between landscape, viticulture and history.

Fernão de Magalhães is also part of the identity of the place: Sabrosa is considered the birthplace of the 15th-century Portuguese seafarer who was the first to circumnavigate the world. The PR6 “Rota Urbana de Fernão de Magalhães” is a 2.9 km circular urban hiking trail. It connects several places associated with the history of Sabrosa and Fernão de Magalhães. For a shorter walk with a historical focus, this format is an alternative to the two 6.8 km hiking trails.

Wine, gastronomy and regional traditions

Sabrosa's culinary side is particularly evident in its events and wine programmes. The Feira do Vinho e do Azeite takes place annually and combines typical gastronomy, wine, olive oil, handicrafts and local products. The Lagarada Tradicional in Celeirós do Douro brings the traditions of the grape harvest to life in old granite lagares and combines gastronomy with regional products.

At Quinta do Crasto, individually designed wine programmes with lunch or dinner are offered. Boat trips on the Douro and access to the farm shop are available as optional additions. These programmes are available subject to advance reservation and confirmation. Anyone wishing to make wine and regional cuisine a fixed part of their trip should explicitly take such offers into account when planning and check the conditions in advance.

Hiking trails and suitable orientation

The Trilho do Castro de Sabrosa is 6.8 km long. The Trilho de Provesende/ Cais da Foz do rio Pinhão is also 6.8 km long. Together with the 2.9 km PR6, this provides a choice of different trail formats: a shorter circular urban trail and two longer hiking trails, each with its own thematic focus. Take these differences into account if you would like to shape your days around landscape, culture and wine.
