It contains a panel painting by Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho depicting the Last Supper. Numerous documents and contracts relating to the church’s construction history have survived up to 1786, including a contract dated 18 November 1737.
Archaeological Traces and Panoramic Views
The Alto da Fonte do Milho archaeological site has been classified as a national monument since the 1950s and covers approximately one hectare. It is also known as Castellum Romano and is situated as a Roman fort on a promontory above the Douro Valley. The Roman villa there contains traces of settlement dating from the 1st century AD to Late Antiquity in the 4th or 5th century AD. The defensive system includes two schist walls.
The São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint, east of the village of Galafura at an altitude of 566 metres, offers an impressive landscape experience. From there, you can look out over the Douro and the regions of Armamar, Sabrosa, Tabuaço, Fontelo and Valença do Douro. Monte de São Leonardo was also the site of a Roman fort. Those wishing to explore the surrounding area along a well-known road can bear in mind that the scenic EN 222 route to Pinhão begins in Peso da Régua.
