Murça amid Granite Landscapes, Rivers and History

Murça combines a green, granite-dominated forest landscape with river trails, historic buildings and a distinctive culinary tradition. The Serra da Garraia conveys an impression of the landscape, while the Tua and Tinhela rivers offer different opportunities to experience nature. River Trails and Viewpoints

The Trilho da Sobreira runs along the right bank of the Tua to the village of Sobreira and then continues to the Miradouro Casa da Floresta. This viewpoint is located in Sobreira beside an old forester’s house in a newly reforested area and overlooks the Tua River. The Trilho do Tinhela offers a different perspective on the landscape: it follows the left bank of the Tinhela to near its mouth and passes thermal springs.

The Trilho dos Passadiços do Tinhela offers a particularly distinctive trail experience. Wooden walkways and small observation points accompany the Tinhela’s riverside landscape. The trail begins and ends at the Porta de Entrada de Murça of the Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua. In addition, the Miradouro de São Domingos offers panoramic views of Murça and the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. The Miradouro de Palheiros is integrated into an ancient Castro on a quartzite spur and includes an interpretation centre.

Murça’s Archaeological and Historical Heritage

The Crasto de Palheiros, also called Fragada do Castro, is a quartzite ridge shaped and built by the populations of the region from the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC to the present day. Between 2900 and 2300 BC, during the Chalcolithic period, the 2.5-hectare ridge was transformed into a large stone monument. In the Iron Age, the site was used again as a settlement; this settlement existed for approximately 500 years and was abandoned towards the end of the 1st century AD. The Centro Interpretativo do Crasto de Palheiros opened on 1 June 2009. The site is also considered one of five particularly suitable locations in the Vale do Tua for observing planets, stars and constellations.

The Roman past is also visible. A Roman road ran through Murça, connecting Astorga with the mouth of the Douro and crossing the Tinhela. The Ponte e Calçada Romana was built by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago and was subsequently used and maintained continuously. It can be reached from the EN15 at kilometre 145 via a road branching off to the right; alternatively, there is access near the Escola Profissional de Murça.

Other traces in the town lead through different historical periods. The Igreja Matriz de Murça contains gilded carved altarpieces, a 16th-century triptych by Pedro de França, a crucified Christ and a Gothic depiction. The present church was rebuilt and extended around 1734 after an earlier chapel was destroyed by fire. The Praça 5 de Outubro is home to the Pelourinho Manuelino de Murça and the Paços do Concelho, a 17th-century manor house occupying the entire northern wing of the Praça Velha.

Queijadas, Wine and Key Dates

The Queijadas de Murça, a convent pastry filled with sugar, egg yolk, pumpkin jam, almonds and cinnamon, are part of the local identity. The recipe is preserved by Murça’s confectioners. The Toucinho-do-Céu de Murça is believed to have originated there; the sweet is regarded as a traditional speciality of the Benedictine nuns of São Bento in Murça. Murça lies within the demarcated Douro wine region, and the agricultural products of the Município also include olive oil and honey.

Several dates are of interest when planning a trip: the Feira do Azeite e do Vinho takes place annually on the second weekend of May, and the summer Romaria Nosso Senhor dos Aflitos on the second weekend of July. The Feira de Murça takes place on the 13th and 28th of every month and dates back to a medieval market charter issued by D. Dinis on 18 April 1304.
