Mesão Frio between the Douro Valley and vineyard terraces

Mesão Frio is a destination for anyone who wants to combine hiking routes, vineyard terraces, river landscapes and regional history. The 39-kilometre Grande Rota “Porta do Douro” crosses the five freguesias of the municipality of Mesão Frio. There are also several circular trails with their own starting points and different scenic highlights. This allows you to plan your holiday days specifically around hiking, views, culture or culinary discoveries.

Hiking with views of the Douro Valley

The “Trilho de Barqueiros” circular trail leads to the Miradouros das Águias and de São Silvestre. From there, views open up over the Douro Valley and the landscape of the Região Demarcada do Douro wine region. The “Trilho de Santo André” runs across the vineyard terraces of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, a World Heritage Site recognised by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. Anyone looking for a route with clearly designated starting and ending points will find both at the “Trilho de Santo André”, in the centre of Mesão Frio, next to the information board near the Centro de Acolhimento ao Visitante do Douro.

The other circular trails also allow for concrete day planning. The “Trilho de Cidadelhe” begins and ends next to the information board near the building of the Junta de Freguesia of Cidadelhe. The “Trilho de Barqueiros” starts and ends at the information board near the Igreja de São Bartolomeu de Barqueiros. On the “Trilho de Vila Marim”, the start and finish are in the Miradouro district, near the building of the Junta de Freguesia. The route leads to the Miradouro de Donsumil at an altitude of 670 metres, from where you can see the river and the vineyards of the Douro Valley. Culture between museums and pilgrimage routes

Mesão Frio also offers specific destinations for days away from the hiking trails. The Casa-Museu do escritor Domingos Monteiro is located in his former estate and residence, the Casa das Quintãs. Exhibitions featuring original documents and materials provide insights into his life and work. Advance reservation is required for this visit. At the Centro Interpretativo do Barco Rabelo, you can learn more about the history of the river communities in the municipality and about the Douro’s former wine-transport boats, known as Barcos Rabelos. A screening room shows films about their history and journeys; there is also an area for local handicrafts and regional products. The centre is located next to Rede railway station.

An unusual exhibition destination is the Museu do Triciclo, with more than 200 tricycles from Portugal, Europe, North America and Asia. The collection spans from the 19th century to the 1990s and also includes rare and valuable pieces. You can find historical traces at the Igreja de São Nicolau: its churchyard contains seven Romanesque tomb chests with rectangular lids and three sculpted sides. The Arcas Tumulares Românicas were classified as public heritage on 20 March 1945 by Decree No. 34,452. The Pelourinho de Mesão Frio was once a symbol of local power and is associated with municipal charters from 1152 and 1513.

Riverside areas, traditions and regional cuisine

For a more relaxed day of your holiday, the Zona Fluvial da Rede offers parking, a usable quay or landing stage, a bar and a picnic area. Swimming in the river is unsupervised. The Zona Fluvial do Rio Teixeira has a large lawn, a picnic park and an events area for open-air concerts; swimming in the river is also unsupervised there. Another perspective on the region is offered by the Caminho de Torres, which connects Salamanca with Santiago de Compostela and passes through the freguesias of Oliveira, Vila Marim and Mesão Frio – Santo André.

The annual Romaria in honour of São Mamede is part of the local tradition. Regional specialities include kid, Marrã, wood-fired roasts, meat in Vinho d'Alhos, Rojões and Cozido à Transmontana. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore base their choice of accommodation on the planned excursions: near the respective starting point on a hiking day, near the desired museums and historic sites on a cultural day, or near one of the riverside areas on a relaxing day.
