Discover Maia: Nature, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Maia
Maia combines impressive landscapes with culture, regional traditions and a wide range of activities. Between wooded hills, viewpoints, historic buildings and well-maintained trails, you will find various ways to enjoy a trip at your own pace. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Maia can make their preferred combination of nature, activity, history and relaxation the starting point for planning their trip.
Landscapes between forests and viewpoints
A characteristic place is Jardim do Monte Penedo. Its surroundings include areas with oak trees, including Portuguese oaks, as well as streams, lakes and disused quarries. Monte de São Miguel-O-Anjo reaches 255 metres, making it the highest point in the municipality of Maia. The hill consists of shale and gives the landscape a distinctive geological character.
Monte de Santo Ovídeo and Monte da Caverneira offer further viewpoints. At Monte de Santo Ovídeo, there is a viewpoint overlooking the parish of Castêlo da Maia. Monte da Caverneira is characterised by higher viewpoints and stands made up of different combinations of pine and oak trees. Monte de Santa Cruz, on the other hand, combines religious significance with relaxation: it is a place of worship and a traditional pilgrimage, while also serving as a recreational area and viewpoint.
Trails for different day plans
Maia can also be explored via signposted and described trails. The PR2 Caminhos Rurais de Folgosa circular route is 3.1 kilometres long and follows rural paths featuring examples of the built cultural landscape. The PR1 Vilar de Luz circular route covers 5.5 kilometres and runs along agricultural and wooded paths. The linear PR4 – Lugares no Alto de Folgosa e S. Pedro Fins trail is 6.1 kilometres long and leads, among other places, to Santo Ovídio Chapel, Monte de São Miguel-o-Anjo and Vilar de Luz. These different trail lengths help you shape each day according to your preferred scope and focus.
The Caminho Português Central also passes through Maia. Along the entire route, the characteristic yellow arrows of the Camino de Santiago indicate the way. When planning a trip with children or several generations, clearly described trail options like these can provide a way to combine active days with shorter cultural and relaxation breaks, without structuring the entire stay around a single activity.
Culture, history and local insights
The Igreja do Divino Salvador in Moreira is a religious building in the Mannerist style. It belonged to the former monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine; the main chapel is lined with blue-and-yellow patterned tiles. The Museu de História e Etnologia da Terra da Maia is housed in a building that served as Maia’s town hall until 1902. At Quinta dos Cónegos, you can also visit a manor house built between 1727 and 1737 in the Baroque style, with a strong influence from the school of Nasoni.
Fundação Gramaxo preserves the original rural buildings of Quinta da Boa Vista. These include the manor house, the threshing floor, Casa da Eira, the estate manager’s house, the cowshed, the coach house and the bandstand. The Fundação Gramaxo museum houses parts of the Maria de Fátima Gramaxo collection. Those interested in everyday history, architecture and regional ways of life can plan these places as individual cultural highlights.

There are also free-flight demonstrations featuring birds of prey.
At Quinta da Gruta, visitors can take part in the cycles of organic farming in gardens and orchards. The PR3 Rota Produtos da Terra trail includes a visit to the Sweet Moranguinho farm.
