Porto: City History, Coast and Regional Experiences
Accommodation in Porto
Porto combines a historic centre with distinctive architecture and art venues; the coast and rivers offer quite different holiday experiences. You can choose your focus: city history and museums, beaches and water sports, or routes through a river landscape. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your trip.
City history, architecture and art
Much of Porto’s historic centre has retained its medieval street plan and structure. This outstanding urban landscape has a 2,000-year history. The Luís I Bridge and Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery in Vila Nova de Gaia was once used as a fortress and offers views over Porto.
The Torre dos Clérigos is a Baroque structure dating from the first half of the 18th century. After climbing 240 steps, you can enjoy panoramic views over Porto and the Douro. Casa da Música offers a different way to experience architecture, with guided tours of the building designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
In Serralves, the Museum of Contemporary Art hosts exhibitions by prominent Portuguese and international artists. Serralves Villa is an example of Art Deco architecture. The 18-hectare park includes formal gardens, woodland, a traditional farm and a treetop walk. Regular STCP routes 201, 207 and 502 serve Serralves; check the timetable when planning your visit.
Coast, water sports and regional traditions
Praia de Matosinhos offers conditions for surfing, bodyboarding and kitesurfing. A seafront promenade runs along the beach and is used, among other things, for cycling. There are several restaurants serving fish and seafood dishes in the area around Praia de Matosinhos. Beach time, exercise and food make this a different holiday focus from the historic buildings in the centre.
The beach at Vila do Conde stretches for about six kilometres to the mouth of the Rio Ave. Praia Azul in Vila do Conde is particularly popular with surfers. Vila do Conde is also known for its bobbin lace, a tradition practised by the women of the region with great skill and patience. In Póvoa de Varzim, an extensive, busy beach lies beside a rough sea appreciated by surfers. These coastal towns bring their own character to your choice of holiday activities.
Routes, rivers and places to visit
The Passadiços do Paiva trails pass through five geosites in the Arouca Geopark: Garganta do Paiva, Cascata das Aguieiras, Vau, Gola do Salto and Falha da Espiunca. The two trailheads are in Areinho and Espiunca. A transfer service connects the ends for visitors who want to walk the route in one direction only. The Paiva and its tributaries also offer opportunities for rafting, canoeing and canyoning. These details can help you choose between a day on the water and a walking tour.
The 516 Arouca pedestrian suspension bridge is 516 metres long and 175 metres above the river. It is beside the Cascata das Aguieiras geosite and close to the Passadiços do Paiva. In Amarante, the Caminho de Torres passes the Ponte de São Gonçalo. For another regional focus, you can explore the Rota do Vinho do Porto by car, train or boat; a river cruise runs from the Gaia quay to Régua. The route includes winery visits, tastings and wine tourism experiences.
Penafiel also offers an archaeological focus: Castro de Monte Mozinho is a museum site with a recommended route, information panels and an interpretation centre. The Museu Municipal de Penafiel also includes the Castro and the Moinho da Ponte de Novelas museum centre. Group tours of both sites are available by prior arrangement.
Choose the holiday focus for your holiday apartment
The differences between city history, art, the coast and active excursions give you specific points to consider when choosing where to stay. If you mainly want to experience architecture and museums, the historic sites and Serralves set the tone. For beaches and water sports, Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim offer different options. If you prefer walking routes, river activities or wine tourism, you can make these interests a priority when looking for a holiday apartment. This way, your choice of base reflects the holiday you have planned, rather than a general promise about accommodation.
