Discover Paredes: Quartzite Landscapes, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Paredes
Paredes combines contrasting landscapes with remarkable cultural heritage and a wide range of opportunities for active days. Between quartzite cliffs, historic churches, open-air works of art and short circular trails, it is a destination where you can give different weight to nature and culture. When looking for a holiday apartment in Paredes, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred focus: discovery tours, exercise, family time or historic sites.
Quartzite, gorges and green places to relax
The Canhão da Senhora do Salto is particularly impressive. Here, the Rio Sousa cuts through quartzite rock, whose hardness and resistance to erosion have formed a very narrow, deep valley with vertical slopes. The Torre do Castelo de Aguiar de Sousa has been converted into a viewpoint overlooking the quartzite cliffs of the surrounding mountains. From there, you can observe the waterfalls of the Levadas and the confluence of the Rio Sousa in the direction of the Douro.
The landscape experience also includes the CISS – Centro de Interpretação da Senhora do Salto. It is located in the Natura 2000 site Site de Valongo, designated as a Zona Especial de Conservação. Interactive facilities convey the area’s past and help visitors interpret the Senhora do Salto site in the present day. For quieter hours, Parque da Cidade de Paredes is a good option. The approximately 2.5-hectare park has areas for recreational sports and play areas for children. The skate park incorporates ramps, rails and walls; it is designed for skateboards, inline skates and freestyle BMX.
Churches, art and local traditions
One cultural highlight is the Igreja de São Pedro do Mosteiro de Cete. Classified as a Monumento Nacional since 1910, the church is part of the Rota do Românico. It houses a funerary chapel richly decorated with Hispano-Moorish polychrome tiles, belonging to D. Gonçalo Oveques; a cloister connects the former monastery buildings with the church. The Igreja de Santo Estêvão e o Mosteiro de Vilela also tell the story of medieval monastic history. The ensemble was fundamentally remodelled in the modern era and is classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público.
In Louredo stands the present-day Igreja de São Cristóvão, built in the 18th century and featuring richly ornamented altarpieces in the Barroco de Estilo Nacional style. The Núcleo Museológico Padre Amadeu Soares da Silva complements this with a historical collection of the Louredo parish displayed in three rooms. The Circuito Aberto de Arte Pública connects 18 works by national and international artists with nine additional temporary installations. Other details include the Palacete da Granja, with Brazilian-influenced features and yellow-and-white façade tiles with high relief from the Massarelos factory.
Trails and activities for different types of travel days
For a manageable walk, the Trilho dos Moinhos (PR1) is a good choice: a short circular trail measuring 5.2 km. The Trilho dos Chocolateiros also introduces visitors to a Sobrosa tradition: in the afternoon, coffee and Broa were served in a ceramic vessel called a “chocolateira”. Those looking for longer sporting activities can find mountain-bike tours via the Rota do Românico lasting a morning, a full day or two days, with route lengths of 20 to 75 km.
There is also a clear destination for travellers interested in motorsport: the Kartódromo de Baltar comprises a 1,203-metre karting track, as well as one track each for rallycross and kartcross. Another option is the Campo de Golfe do Aqueduto, with a varied and challenging 9-hole course, Par 3 and two differently designed teeing areas.
Getting there and choosing the right base
