Maceira combines a varied landscape with an unusually vivid industrial and cultural history. Hiking, Geology and Nature Experiences

The circular trail through the Amazónia Valley leads through a green and peaceful landscape. At 7.2 km in length and with an easy to moderate difficulty level, it is suitable for a day trip combining exercise and nature observation. At the Observatório da Pedreira de Calcário, you can learn more about the local geological and palaeontological context of the quarry and its extraction activities. You can also observe various bird species there, particularly birds of prey and waterfowl.

The Jardim Jurássico complements this focus with a short educational trail about local geology and palaeontology. On display is a small collection of marine ammonites and ichnofossils, as well as some Jurassic flora. At the same time, it reconstructs a past dating back more than 150 million years. Those who prefer to follow a stream can find the Trilho da Amazónia in Leiria: it runs along the Arneiro stream and leads through diverse vegetation and a succession of small woodland areas.

Industrial History to Discover

Maceira is strongly shaped by the history of cement production. The Circuito da Pedra allows visitors to follow the stages of cement production. The Museu do Cimento presents the history, culture and heritage of the Secil Maceira-Liz factory. Its eight exhibition areas address industrial, geological, palaeontological, technological and environmental topics.

Individual facilities also make this development tangible. The building of the Central Turbo-Geradora and the original equipment have been preserved and converted into a museum; the facility was decommissioned in 1972. The Parque da Água explains the water treatment process at the Maceira-Liz factory—from extraction to the provision of drinking water for social and industrial purposes.

The older railway history includes the Locomotiva n.º 1, manufactured by A. Borsig in Germany. It was acquired in 1926 and made its first journey in July of that same year to Martingança station via the railway branch line that connects the E.C.L. there with the Linha do Oeste. The steam locomotive remained in operation until 1987, reached a maximum speed of 30 km/h and is one of the rarest surviving examples in Europe.

Churches, Art and Local Heritage

The Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Luz was built around 1521 on the site of an earlier chapel. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz was expanded and restored in 1887, with Manueline elements preserved and incorporated. The Capela dos Santos Brancos, also known as the Capela do Pranto or Capela da Descida da Cruz, contains a stone altarpiece depicting Jesus in his mother’s lap, the holy women and the Apostle John to the right of Our Lady. The chapel was completed in 1565 in the Renaissance style; the altarpiece and dome are attributed to the school of João de Ruão.

Further insights into regional identity are provided by the Rancho Folclórico de Maceira, with its research and collecting activities, and by the Casa Amarela de Maceira, which reopened in 2024 as a gallery and cultural centre and promotes local artists. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Barroquinha combines 17th-century religious architecture with an attached spring built in the 18th century. Inside is a polychrome image of its patron saint from the 17th century.

Festivals and Regional Traditions

If you plan your trip around cultural dates, the local festivals provide notable occasions. The Festa de Santo Amaro takes place on the weekend close to 15 January. On Saturday evening, the traditional “Meda” is part of the programme; on Sunday, regional dried fruits are sold, including strings of pine nuts. The Solenidade do Senhor dos Passos takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and includes two night-time processions through streets decorated with candles. The Festa Grande, held close to 8 September, is characterised by traditional decorated carts carrying cakes.
