Trancoso: Medieval City Walls and Culture in the Highlands

Trancoso is located on a plateau at an altitude of 870 metres and combines a medieval town character with a remarkable cultural density. Protected by walls, the town preserves a medieval atmosphere in its narrow streets and stone houses. As part of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal network, Trancoso is particularly interesting for travellers who want to discover history not only in individual buildings, but also in the character of an entire town.

City Walls, Towers and Historical Testimonies

The Castelo e Muralhas de Trancoso was classified as a National Monument by a decree dated 8 July 1921. Its Torre de Menagem stands out due to the rare shape of a pyramid with a truncated tip. There is also an Arab doorway with an approximately horseshoe-shaped arch – a detail that makes a tour of the historic complex particularly vivid. The tourist office is located next to the Portas d’El Rei, one of the main entrances to the historic centre. Free guided tours of the historic centre are offered there if requested in advance, preferably one week beforehand.

Other cultural and historical sites include the Igreja de Santa Maria de Guimarães. The church dates from the 18th century and was built on a Romanesque hermitage dating from 1171. The Casa do Gato Preto or Negro is a house of Jewish origin; its façade includes, among other things, a symbol of the Lion of Judah. The tomb of the shoemaker, poet and prophet Gonçalo Anes Bandarra, erected in 1642, is located in the Igreja de São Pedro. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Fresta is also one of Trancoso’s oldest churches and was classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público in 1944.

Jewish Heritage and the World of Bandarra

The Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso is located in Trancoso’s former Jewish quarter. It includes rooms for temporary exhibitions, a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Inquisition with the 515 names of prisoners from Trancoso, and the Beit Mayim Hayim synagogue – Casa das Águas Vivas. This provides access to an important historical chapter of the town.

The Casa do Bandarra is dedicated to the poet Gonçalo Anes Bandarra (1500–1556) and his prophetic verses. There, you can hear Bandarra’s verses from the bottom of a well; a reconstruction of his trial is also accessible. This makes it possible to create a varied stay for families with different interests: historical architecture can be followed by exhibitions, religious testimonies or an unusual literary encounter.

Routes for Hiking Days and Bicycle Tours

Those who want to experience Trancoso not only through its streets and squares but also through its landscape will find a clearly described hiking option in the PR1-TCS Guardiões do Planalto. The main route is 21 kilometres long. A variant shortens the route to approximately 15.5 kilometres; you should allow about 4 hours and 30 minutes for this route. The route offers views over the expanses of the Riba-Côa region in a natural landscape shaped by both nature and people. When planning your day, therefore, take the respective route length and the stated time into account.

The Trancoso | Percurso Azul begins at Praça Dom Diniz. After crossing the wall, it leads through Moreira de Rei and then reaches Trancoso via the streets of the northern historic town centre, ending at Praça Dom Diniz. For bicycle tours, the Grande Percurso Ciclável AHP also passes through Trancoso. It follows scenic roads with little traffic. In total, this cycling route is approximately 700 kilometres long and can be divided into a northern loop of approximately 300 kilometres and a southern loop of approximately 400 kilometres.
