Fornos De Algodres – between granite landscapes and Serra da Estrela

Fornos de Algodres lies at the transition between the highlands of Beira Alta and the Serra da Estrela. The landscape is defined by clear contrasts: granite dominates, smaller schist and quartzite deposits add their own accents, and the upland landscape ranges from 310 to 960 m in elevation. As part of the Estrela Geopark Mundial da UNESCO, the area combines nature experiences with a remarkably long cultural history. Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find the EBIO Ribeira Muxagata, an approximately 3 km long, linear and easily accessible trail. The route runs parallel to the Ribeira da Muxagata until its confluence with the Rio Mondego. This clearly defined route makes the trail a well-contained activity within a varied day of travel.

The Rota dos Miradouros within the Freguesia de Algodres and the Rota dos Solares within the Vila de Fornos de Algodres offer further perspectives. The Rota dos Solares highlights several aristocratic solares, thereby connecting the townscape with history. From the Castro de Santiago, the view extends across the valleys of the Ribeiras de Vila Chã and da Muxagata to the foot of the Serra da Estrela. The Castro is also a geosite of the Estrela Geopark Mundial da UNESCO and is linked to the shaping of the granite landscape.

Fraga da Pena also shows how closely nature and cultural themes can be connected here. The site forms a natural amphitheatre whose “stage” rises to an elevation of 750 m. Fraga da Pena was also a ceremonial site dating from the late 3rd millennium BC, during the transition from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age. The Tor da Fraga da Pena is likewise a geosite of the UNESCO Geopark associated with the shaping of the granite landscape.

Water, swimming and flexible day planning

For a more peaceful change of pace, Praia Fluvial da Ponte de Juncais offers floating pools for swimming. In summer, the area is supervised by a lifeguard. If your travel group would like to combine active and more relaxed days, you can combine a trail along the Ribeira Muxagata with a day of swimming, without having to infer any particular order or duration. You can then choose accommodation more specifically to suit your preferred daily rhythm and planned excursions.

Archaeology and local history

The past is present in Fornos de Algodres at several different sites. The Dólmen da Matança was built in the Neolithic period and continued to be used during the Chalcolithic. The CIFA presents archaeological evidence from 7,000 years of Fornos de Algodres’ history. Guided visits to the most important sites in the Concelho de Fornos de Algodres depart from the CIFA.

Historic buildings include the Igreja Matriz de São Miguel in Fornos de Algodres, first mentioned in documentary records in 1170, and the Igreja da Misericórdia in Fornos de Algodres, with its façade in the Joanine Baroque style. The Igreja da Misericórdia de Algodres dates back to the 18th century; the Misericórdia was founded as early as 1621, but only received its own church in that century. The relatively well-preserved Calçada Romana near the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça formed part of an important Roman road linking Mérida with Chaves.

The present-day Pelourinho de Fornos de Algodres also forms part of the townscape; it was created in 1933 as a revivalist work. Fornos de Algodres belongs to the demarcated Dão wine region. In addition, all the Freguesias of the Concelho belong to the demarcated production area of Queijo Serra da Estrela. The cheese produced in Fornos de Algodres is based on traditional methods for both milk production and cheesemaking.
