Marialva: Discover the Castle, History and Trails

Marialva combines an impressive castle complex with Roman history, religious art and varied trails through the surrounding countryside. One Castle and Three Town Centres

Castelo de Marialva was classified as a national monument by Decree No. 95/78 of 12 September 1978. The classification covers the keep, walls, gates and other surviving remains. The structure was restored in 1200 by D. Sancho I and expanded and rebuilt in 1295 by D. Dinis. From here, there is a panorama of the Serra da Marofa and the surrounding region.

Marialva consists of three town centres: the Cidadela or Vila inside the Castelo, the Arrabalde outside the fortification walls and the Devesa south of the citadel. Devesa occupies the site of the former Roman city of Aravorum. The Roman settlement of Marialva was known by the name Civitas Aravorum. Later periods also left their mark: D. Dinis established an annual fair in Marialva in 1286, while the former town hall at Largo da Praça recalls the municipality’s administrative and judicial autonomy in the 16th and 17th centuries.

There are many details around the castle that make a tour varied and interesting. At the Porta do Anjo, the historic measurements Vara, Côvado and Palmo are inscribed on the side doorposts. On the main square below the citadel stands the pillory of Marialva. The Igreja de Santiago dates from the 16th century and has a Manueline portal as well as two Romanesque inscriptions from the 12th century.

In the Igreja de São Pedro, notable elements include the bell tower with two bells, a wall fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and a painted wooden coffered ceiling renewed in the 18th century. Outside the walls stands the Capela de N. Sra. de Lourdes / S. João Baptista next to the Porta do Anjo da Guarda; it was probably built in the 17th century. The Capela Nª Srª Da Guia is a small Mannerist religious building with an elongated floor plan and a single interior space.

Circular Trails with Changing Perspectives

The PR1 MED is an easy circular trail through the most important places in Marialva. It runs mostly along paths and narrow tracks, passing Castelo de Marialva and the Capela Nª Srª Da Guia, as well as places such as Cabeça da Corte. Every bend reveals different perspectives of Marialva and the surrounding area. Anyone planning a longer cycling tour will find the GR22 – Grande Travessia BTT, a route homologated by the Federação Portuguesa de Ciclismo as a Grande Travessia de BTT. The section from AH Castelo Rodrigo to AH Marialva is 41.85 km long. Another option is the PR2 MED, a circular trail through Mêda, Longroiva and Marialva.

Festivals and Orientation on Site

Recurring events include the Feira de Santiago on the Apostle’s Day, 25 July. In addition, the Festa e Romaria de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios takes place in Marialva on the third Sunday in August. Several editions of the Mercado Medieval have been held in Marialva; one documented edition welcomed around 15,000 visitors.
