Discover Guarda: History, Trails and Water

Guarda combines a historic centre enclosed by walls with distinctive towers, sacred art and trails through the landscape. More than eight centuries of history shape the old town centre. History within the city walls

A good starting point for exploring Guarda’s history is the Torre de Menagem. It stands at the highest point of the city, at an altitude of 1,056.3 metres, and offers a 360-degree view over Guarda and the surrounding region. From there, the fortifications of Trancoso and Pinhel, Vila do Jarmelo and areas beyond the Côa can be seen. The Torre dos Ferreiros dates from the 13th century, was built at the request of King D. Dinis and has been classified as a National Monument since 1956. You can reach its summit by panoramic lift or by stairs.

The churches also tell stories of different eras. Construction of the present-day Sé da Guarda began in 1390 and was completed in the Manueline context. Its Gothic interior comprises a central nave, two aisles, a pronounced transept and a clearly defined chancel. Notable details include Manueline influences and a monumental altarpiece made of Ançã stone, attributed to the school of João de Ruão. The present-day Igreja de S. Vicente is an 18th-century Baroque reconstruction. It is located within the medieval walls and features blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from the lives of Mary and Christ. The Igreja da Misericórdia complements the historic setting as one of Guarda’s most imposing late Baroque buildings.

The former Jewish quarter extended from the Porta d’El-Rei to the forecourt of the Igreja de S. Vicente. It was bounded by the city wall and Rua Direita. The Porta da Erva, also known as Porta da Estrela, is part of Guarda’s defensive system and probably dates from the 13th century. The former Convento de S. Francisco da Guarda comprises a church, an enclosed courtyard and a cloister; the present-day architecture dates predominantly from the 16th and 17th centuries. The former monastery was founded in the 13th century.

Museum, trails and water experiences

The Museu da Guarda was founded in 1940 by the Guarda municipal authorities. Its collections include archaeology and numismatics, sacred sculpture and painting from the 13th to the 18th century, as well as weapons from the 17th to the 20th century. The museum’s responsibilities include researching, preserving and interpreting the collections, as well as developing cultural outreach programmes. At the Caldeirão Reservoir, the river park includes changing rooms, a support bar with a terrace and a lawn area for users. The river bathing area with swimming pools has a floating pool.
