Cobertor de Papa blankets are still woven on traditional handlooms. Santa Eufémia is also associated with a folk tale about an infestation of ants that forced the population to move to another settlement. Traces of anthropomorphic graves bear witness to the great antiquity of Maçainhas.

The Castro de Maçainhas lies on the summit of Monte da Portela. According to the traditional historical classification, it was initially inhabited by the Lusitanians before the Romans came to this area.
