Azaruja: Cork Culture, History and Local Cuisine

Azaruja combines a visible local history with an unusual cork tradition and a distinctive cuisine. History between the Square, Palace and Megaliths

The Pelourinho stands in Azaruja's central square. It symbolises the governing and judicial rights of the Counts of Galveias and provides an immediate illustration of the town's former importance. The Palácio do Conde de Azarujinha complements this historical picture: the palace was built in the 19th century in a simple neoclassical style and has two above-ground floors. According to tradition, the document of capitulation imposed on D. Miguel was drafted in “A Sala” in May 1834.

The religious buildings also reach far back into history. The Igreja de São Bento do Mato is associated with a dolmen dating from approximately 4000 to 3000 BC. The church itself was built in the 18th century and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1957. The area of São Bento do Mato also contains scattered remains from the megalithic and Roman periods, including antas on the Herdade do Almo, Fonte Boa, Azarujinha, Borrazeiro and Zambujal estates. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima was built at the beginning of the 20th century through the collaboration of the local population with the parish.

Cork, Festivals and Specialities

The cork industry shapes Azaruja's cultural character. Catalan migrants in the 19th century helped transform the town into an important centre of the cork industry. The Faca Corticeira knife also originates from this craft history. It was created through the reuse of knives used in cork processing and was later adapted for domestic use.

The Catalan influence is also evident in the cuisine. Tortilha de Favas is considered a local speciality and is rooted in Azaruja's Catalan-influenced tortilla tradition. Another Catalan-influenced dish made with salt cod, garlic, olive oil and bread is attributed exclusively to Azaruja and is traditionally prepared on Ash Wednesday. The Feira Anual de Azaruja is of interest when planning events. The two-hundred-year-old event takes place on the second weekend of September. In addition, a cultural association based in a former cork-processing factory in Azaruja's cork-industry area organises the biennial SURO Festival. The name “SURO” means “cork” in Catalan. For quieter hours, the Pólo Bibliotecário de Azaruja offers literary resources, a reading room and two computers with internet access.
