Vila Velha de Ródão lies on the right bank of the Tagus River. The area extends through the Tagus basin between the Ocreza and Ponsul rivers, combining impressive landscapes with archaeology, regional history and Portuguese everyday culture. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or house for a varied trip will find different ways to explore the area: nature observation, circular trails, museums and cultural-history discoveries can be combined according to individual interests.

Tagus landscapes and exceptional geosites

Among the most striking natural destinations are the Portas de Ródão. They have been classified as a natural monument since 2009. Above this landscape, Castelo do Rei Wamba rises on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Tagus and the Portas de Ródão. The combination of river, rocks and historic structure makes this area particularly interesting for anyone wishing to combine landscape and culture on a single trip.

The Portas do Almourão also reflect the region’s geological character. There, the Ocreza River forms a gorge created by erosion in quartzite cliffs. The Portas do Almourão are classified as a geosite in the Naturtejo Geopark. The landscape is also home to important nesting areas for birds of prey. This offers a nature-focused experience that clearly differs from the town’s cultural and historical attractions.

Hiking trails for active days full of discovery

Several trails explore the area, each with a different focus. The PR3 Caminho do Xisto da Foz do Cobrão is an 11.3 km circular route through Foz do Cobrão. It follows the Ocreza past quartzite rocks where griffon vultures can sometimes be seen, while otters swim in the river. The trail also passes the Portas do Vale Mourão, a classified geosite in the Naturtejo Geopark.

The PR5 Caminho da Telhada offers panoramic views of the Tagus from Perais. It leads to a river terrace approximately one million years old, considered the Tagus’s oldest terrace. The PR6 VVR Geologia e Arqueologia is an 8 km, easy circular route with a planned duration of 3 hours. It begins next to the CIART – Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre do Tejo at Largo do Pelourinho. For families with different interests, such clearly distinct types of excursion can be helpful when planning each day, without every trip having to follow the same theme.

Other themed trails lead into prehistory and local architecture. The PR4 Caminhos da Pré-História runs through an area with numerous dolmens and burial mounds, as well as many rock engravings on the rocky banks of the Tagus and Ocreza. The PR7 – Rota das Fontes introduces visitors to the traditional architecture of wells and springs, which served the use and management of the vital resource of water. The Rota das Invasões passes military battery fortifications in the Serra das Talhadas.

Museums, archaeology and regional heritage

In a permanent exhibition, CIART interprets the development of the cultural forms of expression of the first inhabitants of the Tagus Valley. The Foz do Enxarrique archaeological site is associated with a camp dating from the Middle Paleolithic. Mundo de Minerais – Coleção Martins „da Pedra“ brings together around 7,000 minerals from different regions of Portugal and from more than a hundred locations worldwide.

Several institutions also focus on more recent economic and social history. Lagar de Varas do Cabeço das Pesqueiras documents the historical stages of olive-oil production – from the use of human and animal labour to hydraulic and mechanical systems. Núcleo Museológico do Azeite in Sarnadas de Ródão follows the production process from the arrival of the olives to the finished oil and preserves an olive press from the first half of the 20th century.

Núcleo Museológico do Contrabando in Perais explores the economic, social and cultural significance of smuggling for relations between Portuguese and Spanish communities. Núcleo Museológico História de uma Comunidade Rural in Fratel highlights the history of a rural community, its occupations, economic activities and customs. In addition, Núcleo Museológico do Linho e da Tecelagem in Foz do Cobrão addresses the history of flax and weaving.

Choose accommodation to suit your preferred travel rhythm

When looking for accommodation, you can consider which experiences should be at the heart of your trip. Anyone primarily interested in geology, hiking trails and river landscapes can use the routes and geosites as the main criteria when choosing the location of a holiday apartment. For cultural and historical trips, the museums, CIART, the archaeological site and the historic heritage provide useful points of reference. Casa de Artes e Cultura do Tejo hosts cultural and artistic events such as cinema, theatre, dance, exhibitions and music concerts. Feira dos Sabores do Tejo presents the gastronomy, handicrafts, tourism, culture and local economic activities of the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão.

Travel arrangements can also be taken into account when planning your trip: a public bus route connects Fratel with Vila Velha de Ródão and back. Via the A23 motorway, the municipality is less than two hours from Lisbon. This allows you to choose your holiday house or apartment according to whether you are planning several days of exploration or want to combine different excursion interests.

For further orientation, you can also explore Oleiros, Idanha-A-Nova, Castelo Branco, Pedrógão Pequeno, Monfortinho, Vila De Rei and Penamacor.
